The Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, which commenced on Monday, witnessed an interesting exchange on Tuesday between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders over the appointment of Mata Prasad Pandey as the Leader of the Opposition. CM Yogi took a jibe at SP chief Akhilesh Yadav for not appointing his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav to the position.

"I congratulate the new Leader of Opposition, but it seems you have deceived your uncle. He is always let down this way. His fate is such because his nephew is always afraid," remarked CM Yogi in the Assembly.

Shivpal Singh Yadav, addressing the Assembly, countered, "Look, I haven’t been deceived. Pandey Ji is very senior. We are Samajwadis (socialists). Even from Speaker Satish Mahana's side, there was a hint towards a chair. My chairs kept changing. I want to say, during the three years I was in contact with you, you also deceived me."

His remark was met with laughter from the Assembly. Shivpal further added, "When you deceived, you got a set back, and SP moved forward. Just wait and see, in 2027 (Assembly election), SP will advance again, and your Deputy CM will deceive you."

What Did Akhilesh Yadav & Dimple Yadav Say?

Commenting on CM Yogi's remarks, SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav stated, "I have not deceived anyone; he has deceived Delhi." This was a reference to the ongoing media speculation about friction between Yogi Adityanath and the BJP high command after the BJP's setback in recent Lok Sabha election results.

Dimple Yadav, SP MP from Mainpuri, was also questioned about CM Yogi’s comments. She responded, "The UP government should focus on its work. Today, there is a flood situation in the Purvanchal region of UP, and there is no electricity in villages for weeks. Therefore, CM Yogi should concentrate on his duties." She also emphasised the need for the government to focus on employment for the youth, stating that it would benefit both the state and the country.

Following Akhilesh Yadav's resignation from the UP Legislative Assembly after becoming an MP, the Leader of Opposition position had been vacant. Contrary to expectations that Shivpal Singh Yadav would be appointed, Akhilesh Yadav surprised many by selecting Mata Prasad Pandey, a Brahmin. Mata Prasad Pandey is a veteran politician from the Itwa constituency in Siddharthnagar.

Who is Mata Prasad Pandey?

A day before the Monsoon Session began, on 28th July, the Samajwadi Party announced Mata Prasad Pandey as the new Leader of Opposition. A seven-term MLA from Itwa constituency in Siddharthnagar, Pandey has also served as the Speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly twice. He is one of the senior leaders of the Samajwadi Party and has held ministerial positions in two SP governments. Pandey first won the Assembly elections in 1980 and has been a prominent figure in UP politics since then.
