New Delhi: After gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and his accomplice Ghulam, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were gunned down in Jhansi on Thursday, an old remark of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has gone viral on the social media. CM Adityanath, while addressing the UP budget session in February, had said that he would completely eliminate the mafia from the state.

During a face-off with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav over the murder of Umesh Pal in broad daylight, CM Adityanath had said that he would completely eliminate the mafia from the state.

"Is it not true that Atiq Ahmed, who has been accused by the victim's family, is part of the mafia fostered by the Samajwadi Party, and we have only worked towards breaking its back?" Yogi Adityanath, pointing a finger at Yadav, had said.

“He is the godfather of all professional criminals and mafias. They have crime in their veins. And I am telling this House today, I will run this mafia to the ground (Mafia ko mitti mein mila dunga)," the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, Yogi Adityanath praised the state police after Asad and Ghulam were killed in the encounter.

"After the encounter of former MP Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and his aide, CM Yogi Adityanath took a meeting on law and order. CM Yogi praised UP STF as well as DGP, Special DG law and order and the entire team," the UP Chief Minister's Office stated, as per news agency ANI.

"Sanjay Prasad, Principal Secretary Home informed the CM about the encounter. A report was placed in front of the CM on this whole matter," the CMO informed.

Earlier, Special Additional Director General (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said, "Asad and Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj and were carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. They were killed in an encounter with the UP STF team."
