The son of a Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA was arrested in connection with the collapse of a multi-storey building in Lucknow, which killed two women and injured several others, news agency PTI reported on Wednesday.
According to a PTI report citing an official source, Nawajish Shahid, the son of SP MLA and former minister Shahid Manzoor, was apprehended in Meerut.
Nawajish Shahid is one of three people named in an FIR filed in connection with the case. The other two are Mohammad Tariq and Fahad Yazdani, the report said.
Nawajish Shahid is alleged to be the owner of the land on which the Yazdan Builders building stood. Shahid Manzoor is a senior SP leader who currently represents Kithore in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
On Wednesday, an FIR was filed at the Hazratganj police station under IPC sections 323 (voluntary causing damage), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 420 (fraud), and 120B (criminal conspiracy), as well as section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
The five-storey Alaya Apartments in the Uttar Pradesh capital's Hazratganj area collapsed Tuesday evening, trapping more than a dozen people beneath it.
Abbas Haider's wife, Uzma Haider, 30, and mother, Begum Haider, 72, have died, and two more people are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
An official reported that fourteen people have so far been rescued from the rubble and treated in hospitals, according to the PTI report.
One of the three people named in the FIR has been arrested, and a search is ongoing to find the other two, according to Lucknow Police Commissioner S B Shiradkar, the report added. According to him, the building was built between 2009 and 2010, and while the cause of its collapse has not yet been determined, experts will look into it.
