The special investigation team (SIT) probing the double murder of mafia brothers Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf has started its proceedings in the case. The mafia brothers, while in police escort and handcuffed, were shot dead on April 15 during a live television broadcast. The SIT first reached Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj police station where the two were kept and spoke to the police personnel who were on duty at that time.
The investigation team will also visit Colvin Hospital, where the mafia brothers were brought for a medical examination from Dhoomanganj police station when the assailants who posed as journalists opened fire on them.
The SIT that was constituted yesterday is also expected to reach Shahganj police station for investigation. Prayagraj Commissioner of Police Ramit Sharma formed the SIT which includes three police officials.

Meanwhile, Atiq’s lawyer on Tuesday said that a letter is being sent to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the directions of Atiq who said to deliver the letter in case of his death.
The "secret letter" was allegedly written by Ahmed two weeks before his death.
"That letter in a sealed envelope is neither with me nor sent by me. It is kept somewhere else and sent by some other person. I don't know the contents of the letter," said his lawyer Vijay Mishra.

A post-mortem report of the two brothers who were shot just hours after Atiq’ son, Asad’s burial — shot in a police encounter — revealed that Atiq was hit by eight bullets and Ashraf by six bullets.
According to the report, Atiq suffered one bullet wound to the head, one to the neck, two on the chest, and the remaining bullets in various parts of his body, including the stomach and hand. One bullet was lodged in the upper part of Atiq's head from the left temple.
Ashraf, on the other hand, was shot twice in the head, with bullets also found in his throat, chest, and abdomen.
