New Delhi: A three-member judicial enquiry committee has been formed after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level probe into the killings of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Khalid Azeem alias Ashraf in Prayagraj on Saturday, news agency ANI reported. According to the report, the panel will be headed by Retired Justice Arvind Kumar Tripathi of Allahabad High Court, and the other two members are retired IPC officer Subesh Kumar Singh and retired district Judge Brijesh Kumar Soni. The committee will be sending the probe report to UP government in two months.
"The chief minister has constituted a three-member judicial commission to probe the killing of Ahmad and Ashraf," Special DG, Law and Order, Prashant Kumar said.
Police have arrested all the three assailants, identified as Lovelesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya and Sunny, and they are being interrogated.
All three miscreants have shown no remorse, as per the ongoing investigation and wanted to gain fame after killing Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf.
Meanwhile, the UP government has submitted a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the shooting incident. The report was sent after a meeting between Sanjay Prasad, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, and the Chief Minister.
It is to be noted that Atiq Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college in Prayagraj for a check-up.
The brothers, both jailed in Prayagraj, were in handcuffs when they were killed in full view of camera crews around 10 pm. The horrifying visuals were circulated widely on social media platforms and television channels.
