Background

IND vs ENG Score Live: India takes on England in the rescheduled 5th test of the test match series at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Friday, July 1. The Indian team will aim to get their hands on the Pataudi Trophy as they lead the series 2-1 and will be much better position at the start of the test in comparison with England.

Both the teams are coming off an impressive test series as India whitewashed Sri Lanka 2-0 at home, whereas England did the same to New Zealand at home (3-0). The test in itself will be special for both the teams as a lot of things are associated with this test match. In relation to the Test Championship standings, India is currently sitting at third, while England has recovered from their disastrous start as their series win over New Zealand has helped them climb up to seventh. The table is currently being topped by Australia which are still unbeaten and looking like a reckoning force.

Also, both the teams are starting off a new era under new captains and head coaches. The last time these two played each other was in the fourth test of the series, back in September 2021. Virat Kohli was the captain of the team, and Ravi Shastri was the head coach, whereas, for England, Joe Root was leading them with Chris Silverwood as the coach. The Dawn of the New Era for India is with Rohit Sharma as the captain and Rahul Dravid as the head coach, though Jasprit Bumrah is the stand-in captain as Rohit Sharma is ruled out because he tested positive for COVID-19. This will be the first an Indian fast bowler will be captaining the Indian side since the legendary Kapil Dev (35 years ago). Whereas, England starts their era under captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum.

Both the teams have performed well this year, but India holds the psychological and mathematical advantage as they just need to avoid a defeat to win the series, whereas, for England, anything less than a win will result in the series defeat.

So far, Joe Root has been the top scorer in the series with 564 runs and three centuries to his name. A huge onus will be on the top order of India as both their top scorers are ruled out (Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul). Also, these two are the only players to have scored a century in the series for India.

England will be relying on the experience of the legendary James Anderson as he returns to the squad. Also, England will be missing Ollie Robinson, who’s the highest wicket-taker in the series (21 wickets). India on the other hand will rely on stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah as he’s been India’s leading wicket-taker in the series with 18 wickets.
