The eight-month-long ethnic violence in Manipur that disrupted the fabric of peaceful co-existence among different communities in the state continued throughout the new year, disrupting development works and economic activities.Here's all that Manipur saw in just the first week of 2024:On the first day of the New Year, four persons were killed and 14 others were injured by armed attackers in Thoubal district.Five Manipur Police commandos and a BSF Jawan were also injured in an attack by suspected Kuki militants at the bordering Moreh in Tengnoupal district earlier this week.In a separate incident, armed attackers wearing police uniforms came in four vehicles and opened fire from their sophisticated weapons at people following a quarrel over the forcible collections of money.The state government extended the suspension of mobile internet services in the 2 km stretch in the bordering area between nine districts for another 15 days. The nine districts are Chandel, Kakching, Churachandpur, Bisnupur, Kangpokpi, Imphal West, Thoubal, Tengnoupal, and Imphal East.The state government has also ordered that sirens fitted in ambulances or in vehicles used by any other agencies should not be similar sounding to the ones used by the police and law enforcement authorities as it causes confusion and panic among the people.The police and other authorities have imposed various restrictions and surveillance, including random checking of vehicles, including two-wheelers, as part of the maintenance of law and order situation.In addition to this, 700 checkpoints have been set up in different districts across the state, both in the hills and the valley, and the police and other security forces have been checking all types of vehicles round-the-clock to prevent crimes and the illegal carrying of arms, explosives, harmful materials, and other contraband.Follow #NEWay on ABP Live as we bring you more news and updates from Northeast India.
