Did you know that Sikkim is the only Indian state which is not on India's railway map? You heard that right, Sikkim is the only Indian state without a railway station and it even got its first airport less than 5 years ago in 2018. New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal is the nearest railhead which is situated 117 kms away from its capital Gangtok. But is making remarkable progress with the ongoing construction of the Sivok-Rangpo railway line. This is a transformative project set to integrate the state into India's national railway network by 2024. Stretching 45 kilometers from Siliguri in West Bengal to Rangpo in Sikkim, this all-weather rail line is an engineering marvel crossing challenging terrains of mountains, ravines, and the Teesta river. The project entails the construction of 14 tunnels and 22 bridges, executed with utmost care due to seismic vulnerability and threats of landslides and flash floods. The rail line's significance lies in improved connectivity, turning Sikkim into a tourist hub, and facilitating troop movement in this strategic region, bordering China and neighboring countries. As the project nears completion, it promises economic growth, enhanced security, and improved connectivity in Sikkim, becoming a symbol of progress for the nation.
