We are back on NEWay with more updates from the poll-bound northeastern state of Mizoram. The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) has unveiled its list of candidates who will be contesting the upcoming Assembly elections in 2023. Here's all you need to know: In this crucial assembly election, the MNF has released a diverse candidate list, including two women and 15 new faces. The party will compete in all 40 Assembly seats. Among the notable candidates, Chief Minister and MNF president Zoramthanga will seek re-election from the Aizawl East-I constituency, the seat he won in the 2018 assembly election. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia is also set to run for the Tuichang seat. However, there are some significant changes this time. Home Minister Lalchamliana and Assembly Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo have opted not to contest the election. Minister of Power R Lalzirliana and Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte have decided to change constituencies. The MNF introduced its candidates during an event in Aizawl, where thousands of party workers from Aizawl and surrounding areas gathered. CM Zoramthanga has also launched his election campaign. Lalchamliana's decision to step aside was driven by the desire to inject fresh blood into the party, while Sailo's exclusion from the candidate list was decided by the party. In a noteworthy development, former Minister of State Dr K Beichhua has been ousted from the MNF for 'anti-party conduct'. He is expected to run as a BJP candidate from his Siaha seat. Lalzirliana, who previously represented the Tawi assembly constituency, will now contest the Aizawl North - I seat. This seat is currently held by former Deputy Speaker Vanlalhlana of Zoram People's Movement (ZPM). Royte, who won from Aizawl East - II last time, will run for the Hachhek assembly seat, which is currently held by Congress. Apart from the two ministers stepping down, the rest of the incumbent MNF lawmakers are seeking re-election to the same seats they held in 2018. Additionally, the MNF has taken a step forward in ensuring women representation by fielding two candidates. B. Lalawmpuii, an executive corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation, will replace Royte in the Aizawl East-II seat. Prova Chakma, a newcomer, will make her debut by contesting the West Tupui assembly seat in the Lunglei district of south Mizoram. This election promises to be a dynamic one, with a mix of experienced politicians and fresh faces vying for the people's mandate.
