Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, earlier this month, revealed that a bill to outlaw polygamy will be introduced at the upcoming session of the Assam Assembly in February 2024. He also said that the bill has been developed after months of consultations with various individuals and organizations.He emphasised that the proposed measure would include provisions specifically designed to address concerns related to 'love jihad' within the state. According to officials, in response to a public notice inviting comments on the proposed legislation prohibiting polygamy, the state administration received a substantial 149 recommendations. Of these, 146 were in favour of the measure, showing widespread public support from the public, while three organizations voiced opposition to the bill.On August 21, the state administration issued a notice soliciting public input on the prohibition of polygamy. Residents of Assam were urged to submit their opinions via mail or email by August 30.The state government had formed an expert group to examine the legislative authority of the Assam state legislature to enact such a law. Following consultations with various stakeholders, the committee presented its report to Sarma, affirming that the state legislature possesses the authority to pass such legislation.
