It was established by the Ministry of Home Affairs in response to a tragic incident. In 2014, Nido Tania, a 20-year old student from Arunachal Pradesh was murdered in the Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi, triggering widespread protests. Some challenges faced by people from the northeast in Delhi are language barrier and cultural differences. SPUNER plays a crucial role in bridging this gap, creating awareness, and reducing incidents of trouble.SPUNER further addresses issues such as frauds, scams and problems faced by northeasterners with tenants. They also handle accident cases promptly, assist in post-mortem examinations at hospitals and arrange free medical check-ups for those in need.Delhi Police also has the North East Assistance Team (NEAT), a patrolling vehicle that provides immediate assistance to distress callers, which was launched in 2019.There is also a dedicated distress call helpline for people from the Northeast.
