The Chairperson of the National Commission for Women Rekha Sharma said that we had taken cognizance as soon as we got the information now and earlier also. In an exclusive interview with ABP News, Rekha Sharma said that apart from this, the incidents that have happened with women in Bengal and Rajasthan or anywhere cannot be tolerated.

Local women in Manipur have burnt down the house of one of the accused, who was seen in the May 4 video of two women being paraded naked in the state, as reported by the news agency PTI.
Amid the ruckus in Parliament over the Manipur issue, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the caste violence in the northeastern state is being discussed all over the world. He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should speak on the issue inside Parliament and not outside the House. Manipur is being discussed in the European Parliament, he added.
Amid the ruckus over the Manipur issue in Parliament, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is likely to make an announcement pertaining to a visit to the state.
"The FIR was lodged on May 18 and it was a zero FIR and I'm sure that the police had this video but, from May 18 till this date, we're sitting idle without taking any action on it. Now they have taken the action because the video has been leaked and got viral. CM N. Biren Singh himself stated yesterday that around 100 FIRs similar to this have been registered so far... what about the other 100 women and their FIRs?" Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Manipur viral video, as quoted by ANI. "Now the arrest in this case is just a face-saver to show that there exists a law and order," she said.
The BJP said that a discussion on the situation in Manipur would have sent out a "meaningful and positive" message to the people of the violence-hit state but the opposition parties did not let it happen because they felt that incidents of "misbehavior" with women in Congress-ruled states as well as the violence during the West Bengal panchayat elections may also come up.

Describing the ongoing violence in Manipur as an internal matter of India, America's top diplomat in New Delhi, Eric Garcetti, on Thursday said that our hearts break whenever there's human suffering. Garcetti, who is currently in Washington for consultations with US Government officials, made the comments while responding to a question on a graphic video of two disrobed women being brutalised by a mob in Manipur.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the incident had shamed 140 crore Indians and vowed that no guilty will be spared and law will act with its full might and firmness. I've not seen the video. This is the first that I'm hearing of it. But as I stated before, our hearts break whenever there's human suffering, whether it's in our neighborhood or across the globe or in the country where we're living, the US ambassador said in response to a question. Our hearts continue to go out to Indian people. As I've said, this is an Indian matter and internal matter, but of course we are always here as fellow human beings sympathising with that sort of pain and that sort of suffering, Garcetti told PTI.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent notice to the Government of Manipur on the mob taking away five members of a family from police custody; parading the women naked and sexually assaulting one of them.
NHRC India has taken cognizance of complaints seeking its urgent intervention into the incident of a mob taking away five members of a tribal family from police custody in B Phainom village of Kangpokpi district in Manipur on 4 May 2023.
Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey speaks on the Manipur viral video, says, "I have directed the DGP to take immediate steps to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime and award exemplary punishment as per law. I have also asked the DGP to take action against the Police officials of the station where the complaint of this incident was lodged, for not taking any action."
The second accused has been arrested in the Manipur viral video incident. CM N Biren Singh says that the government will leave no stone unturned to ensure capital punishment for the accused.

The main culprit who was wearing a green t-shirt and seen holding the woman was arrested today morning in an operation after proper identification. His name is Huirem Herodas Meitei (32 years) of Pechi Awang Leikai, ANI reported Govt Sources as stating.

Speaking on the Manipur situation, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said PM Narendra Modi should now approach the issue in Parliament. "Deeply concerned about the fact that the PM was silent for so long. None of us could understand it. We are very glad that he broke his silence, now we would like him to approach the issue in Parliament to discuss it...We want to discuss it when he speaks inside the Parliament. I am very glad, he has at least raised his voice. Now, let him bring the voice to the Parliament itself," ANI quoted Tharoor as saying.
The All India Mahila Congress staged protest in Delhi demanding restoration of peace in Manipur. "Enough is enough. They are not even allowing us to raise our voice in the Parliament or outside the Parliament," said All India Mahila Congress president Netta D'Souza.
"One of the main accused in the Manipur incident has been arrested and by the evening more culprits are likely to be arrested. I am in constant touch with the administration to get the accused will be punished," says chief of National Commission for Women Rekha Sharma.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) condemned the Manipur viral video incident that has led to widespread outrage. Taking suo motu cognisance, the NCW asked DGP Manipur to promptly take appropriate action.
Taking suo moto cognisance of the Manipur viral video, the Supreme Court directed the Centre, state government to take immediate steps and apprise it on what action has been taken. "It is simply unacceptable," the SC said. The court said it was "deeply disturbed" by the video of two women in Manipur being paraded naked. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said strict action would be taken against all the perpetrators and the government was considering the possibility of capital punishment. Singh said the main culpritwas arrested on Wednesday night. "We saw the video and I felt so bad, it's a crime against humanity. I immediately ordered the police to arrest the culprits and the state govt will try to ensure capital punishment for the accused. Every human being should condemn it," ANI quoted Singh as saying.

Manipur is on the boil after a video showing two tribal women from a particuar community being paraded naked went viral. The issues has led to nationwide outrage, with Opposition parties demanding the resignation of Manipur CM Biren Singh.
The video, which was shot on May 4, a day after clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki tribe over the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status, surfaced on Wednesday.
The video shows two women being paraded naked in in Kangpokpi district in Manipur, which has been hit by ethnic violence. The main accused was arrested from Thoubal district on Thursday morning.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said strict action would be taken against all the perpetrators and the government was considering the possibility of capital punishment.
"My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday. After taking suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning," Biren Singh tweeted.
"A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society," the CM further said.
Over 120 have died in the ethnic violence since it erupted two months ago and thousands have been displaced.
Several Opposition parties have targeted the BJP and are expected to raise the incident in Parliament, which is set to be a stormy affair.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Wednesday said the government was ready for a discussion on the situation in Manipur.
