A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to bring a wet spell over Northwest India from January 10-12, along with a forecasted rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C in various regions.

Rajasthan remains under cold conditions, with Fatehpur in Sikar district recording the lowest temperature at 3°C. Sikar, Karauli, and Sangaria also experienced temperatures around 4°C, while Mount Abu recorded 5°C. Jaipur saw a low of 7.4°C, as most cities reported minimum temperatures below 10°C.

Cold Wave Persists Across Punjab and Haryana, Moga Freezes at 2.3°C, Dense Fog Observed in Several Areas

Cold weather conditions continued to persist in Punjab and Haryana on Thursday with Moga being the coldest place as it recorded the minimum temperature of 2.3 degrees Celsius. Fog was observed in some parts of the states early in the morning. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 4.8 degrees Celsius, according to a meteorological department report. Patiala recorded a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, while Ludhiana, Pathankot, Bathinda, Faridkot and Gurdaspur districts experienced cold weather conditions at 6.2, 3.3, 5, 2.6 and 5 degrees Celsius respectively.


In Haryana, Sonipat recorded a low of 3.1 degrees Celsius. Among other places, Ambala's minimum was 7.6 degrees Celsius. Hisar, Karnal, Narnaul, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa recorded their respective minimum temperatures of 3.5, 3.5, 4, 5.7, 4.9 and 5 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a low of 6.1 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. 

Dense Fog Envelops North India, Zero Visibility Reported in Amritsar and Pathankot

North India is experiencing very dense fog, with zero visibility reported at airports in Amritsar and Pathankot. Other areas, including Patiala and Barabanki, reported minimal visibility of 10 meters, while Meerut and Ludhiana had slightly better conditions with 20 to 30 meters visibility. Visibility in Ambala and Karnal in Haryana was at 40 meters, indicating widespread travel disruptions due to the dense fog cover.

Cold Wave Affects Plains, Notable Temperature Drop in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh

A cold wave has impacted the plains of India, with significant drops in temperature observed in various regions. Safdarjung in Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8°C, 2.1°C below normal, while Palam registered 6.5°C. In Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal experienced a significant drop to 5.0°C, 5.4°C below normal, and Mandla recorded a low of 3.0°C, 5.2°C below normal. Other regions, including Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, also witnessed below-normal temperatures, indicating widespread cold conditions.

Severe Cold Wave Sweeps Ladakh, Drass Freezes at a Bone-Chilling -24.8°C

A severe cold wave has engulfed Ladakh, with Drass recording the lowest temperature at an icy -24.8°C, followed by Padum at -24.4°C, and Nyoma at -21°C. Other areas like Kargil, Leh, and Diskit also witnessed extreme cold, with temperatures dropping below -12°C. The neighboring region of Jammu and Kashmir is similarly affected, with Pahalgam and Gulmarg experiencing temperatures of -10.4°C and -9.6°C, respectively.

IMD Issues Cold Wave and Dense Fog Warnings Across Multiple Regions

The IMD has issued cold wave warnings for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir from January 9th to 10th. Dense to very dense fog is expected to persist in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh until January 10th, with extended warnings for other regions like Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Northeast India.

Southern India to Experience Rainfall Due to Cyclonic Circulation

A cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and North Tamil Nadu will bring light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on January 11th and 12th. Kerala and Mahe are forecasted to receive heavy rain on January 12th.

Minimum temperatures are expected to drop further in Northwest, Central India, and Maharashtra in the next 24 hours, with a gradual rise by 2 to 3 degrees thereafter. Cold wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Rajasthan and Haryana, with ground frost expected in parts of Rajasthan.

Light to moderate rain with occasional heavy spells is predicted for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Isolated light rain may occur in Arunachal Pradesh, east Assam, Nagaland, and coastal TN.
