Live Weather Updates 08-01-2025: Cold Wave, Rain, and Snowfall Alerts Across Northwest India
Dense fog and a cold wave disrupted flights in Delhi and North India. IMD issued warnings as temperatures are expected to drop further. The cold wave impacts multiple states with severe conditions.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, warning of dense fog and cold conditions, while moderate fog is expected in other parts of North India.
Flight operations in Delhi and neighboring areas were significantly impacted due to dense fog, with visibility dropping to as low as 100 meters in the morning, leading to delays and cancellations.
A thick blanket of dense fog has reduced visibility to zero in several North Indian regions, including Palam and Amritsar, while a severe cold wave grips the area, causing disruptions in daily life.
Background
A thick layer of fog blanketed Delhi and neighboring areas as North India continued to reel under a cold wave. Visibility was significantly reduced at airports, disrupting flight services. At New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), 200 flights were delayed, and four services were cancelled. The airport authorities advised that flights not equipped for low-visibility landings (CAT III A compliant) might be affected due to the prevailing weather conditions.
IMD Issues Warnings and Forecasts Temperature Drop
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Delhi on Wednesday and a yellow alert for Thursday and Friday. The 7-day forecast indicates that the minimum temperature will start dipping from Wednesday, reaching 5 degrees Celsius by Friday. The past 24 hours saw Delhi's maximum temperature at 16.2 degrees Celsius, 2.8 degrees below normal, and the minimum at 7.4 degrees, 5 degrees above normal.
Impact Across North India
The cold wave extends to states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Rajasthan. In Rajasthan's Nagaur, the minimum temperature recorded was 2.5 degrees Celsius. On Tuesday, over 300 flights were delayed, and around 25 train services were disrupted due to dense fog.
Bihar Weather Update
In Bihar, the temperature has been continuously dropping, particularly in the southern and western parts, including Patna. The IMD forecasts the severe cold to persist until Makar Sankranti (January 14). Dense fog will prevail, with the minimum and maximum temperatures expected to drop by 2-3 degrees from Wednesday.
Western Disturbance to Intensify Cold
A strong western disturbance will affect northwest India from January 10, leading to more snowfall in the mountainous areas and further intensifying the cold throughout Bihar. The IMD predicts a drop in the mercury by one or two degrees Celsius on Wednesday, with the temperature potentially going below 10 degrees Celsius in some areas.
Weather in Uttarakhand and Other Cities
In Uttarakhand, the temperature today is 15.25 °C, with a forecasted minimum and maximum of 4.35 °C and 19.49 °C, respectively. Cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad report clear skies or scattered clouds, with temperatures ranging from 20.6 °C in Ahmedabad to 27.63 °C in Chennai over the next week.
