Widespread Dense Fog Over Indo-Gangetic Plains
Widespread fog conditions were reported across the Indo-Gangetic plains, with visibility dropping below 50 meters in pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. Dense fog with visibility between 50 to 200 meters affected isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh, Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
Forecast: Continued Fog and Upcoming Wet Spell
Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely to persist over the Indo-Gangetic plains for the next 3 to 4 days. An upcoming Western Disturbance, interacting with easterly winds, is expected to bring a wet spell to Northwest India from January 10 to 12, 2025.
Synoptic Systems Overview
A Western Disturbance as a trough in the middle and upper troposphere runs along longitude 84° East, north of latitude 20° North. Cyclonic circulations are present over Northwest Uttar Pradesh, Northwest Assam, and the equatorial Indian Ocean. A trough extends from the equatorial ocean to South Kerala across the South Bay of Bengal and South Tamil Nadu. A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect Northwest India from January 10, 2025.
Minimum Temperature Observations
Minimum temperatures below 0°C were reported in many parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Himachal Pradesh experienced temperatures between 0 to 5°C, while Northwest India recorded temperatures between 5 to 10°C. The lowest minimum temperature over the plains was 5.9°C in Churu, East Rajasthan.
Temperature Forecast
A fall in minimum temperatures by 2 to 4°C is expected in Northwest and Central India over the next two days, followed by a gradual rise. A similar trend is forecasted for East India and Maharashtra, while Gujarat is expected to see no significant changes initially, with a gradual rise thereafter.

Day 1 (January 7): Cold day conditions are forecasted in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Cold wave warnings are issued for Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. Dense fog warnings are in place for Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Sikkim.
Day 2 (January 8): Cold day warnings continue for Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, with cold wave warnings for Himachal Pradesh and West Rajasthan. Very dense fog is forecasted for Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
Days 3 and 4: Fog conditions are expected to reduce, with dense fog warnings remaining for Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, along with the northeastern states.
Days 5 to 7: Dense fog warnings are issued for Assam, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states, with no major warnings for days six and seven.
