Jharkhand Political Crisis LIVE: The situation in Jharkhand has worsened amid escalating tensions after the Enforcement Directorate seized two cars and recovered Rs. 36 lakhs in cash from Chief Minister Hemant Soren's Delhi residence on Tuesday.
ED had summoned Soren to question him regarding his connection with a money laundering investigation in an alleged land fraud case.
The row erupted when an ED team visited his residence in Delhi's Shanti Niketan on Monday morning, only to find that he was not there. The people close to Soren maintained that he was around Delhi for legal consultation and there was no need for ED to come looking for him since he had already conveyed to appear before them, reported Hindustan Times.
Soren was also questioned in connection with the same case at his Ranchi residence on January 20 after skipping ED's summons seven times. Subsequently, he was issued fresh summons by the central agency, to which he had agreed to provide his statement on January 31.
JMM, in a statement, questioned why the ED officials could not wait for two days. "Is it not an insult to the chief minister and the 3.5 crore people of the state?" the statement said.
In a letter to the ED, the Jharkhand CM said that it was "malicious" and a "political agenda" to prevent him from discharging his official duties.
Hundreds of JMM party workers from various regions, including Ranchi, Latehar, Gumla, and Lohardaga, gathered to protest on Monday after ED summoned Soren again. They took out a protest march to the Raj Bhavan in Ranchi, reported PTI. Several angry JMM activists also protested against ED along a stretch of Dimna Chowk and other parts of the state.
The workers alleged that BJP was attempting to destabilize the democratically elected government in Jharkhand and was misusing the state and central agencies such as the ED and CBI for political purposes.
