Jalna, Feb 10 (PTI) A large number of girls and women wearing the `hijab' or veils took out a protest march in Maharashtra's Jalna city on Thursday.
The protest was organized by Jalna Muslims Numanida Khawateen, a local organization, against the ban on the hijab or Islamic head covering at some colleges in Karnataka which has snowballed into a huge controversy.
The protesters carried placards and banners saying 'Hijab first then kitab' (first hijab and then textbook) and `Save the Constitution, Save the Country'. A memorandum to the President of India on the issue was handed over to the deputy collector at the end of the march.
Jaunpur (UP), Feb 10 (PTI) A case of violation of model code of conduct was on Thursday registered against a candidate of Azad Samaj Party and 12 others in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.
The FIR was registered at the Mirganj Police Station of Jaunpur.
Satya Prakash Gautam, a resident of Parianwa, is the Azad Samaj Party candidate from Machhlishahr assembly seat. On Wednesday, Gautam along with his supporters had taken out a rally and reached Mirganj from Machlishahar via Godhna. It is alleged that the candidate held rallies and raised slogans during door-to-door campaigning which is a clear violation of the model code of conduct, police said.
Chandan Kumar, Rohit Chand, Hemant Kumar, Arjesh Kumar, Alok Chandra, Jitendra Gautam, Salam Ansari, Kariya Gautam, Atul Gautam, Chottelal Gautam and others have also been booked in the case.
Station House Officer, Mirganj Police Station, Suresh Kumar Singh said Gautam along with the others also violated COVID-19 protocols.

Srinagar, Feb 10 (PTI) A 3.8 magnitude earthquake hit Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, but there were no reports of any damage or loss of life, officials said.
Its epicentre was at a depth of 29 kilometres in Kel, Gilgit-Baltistan, and tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir around 12.45 pm, they said.
This is the second quake felt in Jammu and Kashmir in the last five days.
A quake of magnitude 5.7 hit on February 5.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address one public meeting each in Saharanpur in UP, Srinagar in Uttarakhand and Mapua in North Goa today. He will address all these rallies physically.
The Prime Minister will be in Saharanpur at 11.45 am and will hold a physical rally in Srinagar, Uttarakhand at 1.45 pm. In this, all the 14 assemblies of Pauri, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts will be targeted.
At 7 pm, PM will be in Mapusa in North Goa where his address will be aired virtually connecting 20 assemblies of South Goa district.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and RLD President Jayant Chaudhary will attend a joint public meeting at 12:30 pm at Numaish Ground in Bijnor.
Additionally, discussion of the Budget session will continue in the Rajya Sabha even today. A total time of 11 hours has been fixed for the discussion on the budget, out of which about 6 hours have been discussed so far.
