Uttarakhand's Director General of Police (DGP) Abhinav Kumar announced on Friday that stringent action under the National Security Act (NSA) would be taken against individuals responsible for the recent attacks on police personnel and incidents of arson and vandalism in Haldwani. The DGP, accompanied by Additional Director General (ADG) of Law and Order AP Anshuman, visited the violence-stricken town in Nainital district to assess the situation in coordination with senior officials.
Speaking on the matter, DGP Kumar informed, "Action under the NSA will be taken against unruly elements who attacked police personnel and indulged in arson and vandalism at the police station in Banbhoolpura." This move comes in response to the disturbing violence that erupted following the demolition of an illegally-constructed madrasa and a prayer area in the Malik ka Bageecha locality, dominated by the Muslim community.
"The situation has been brought under control to a large extent with the imposition of curfew," DGP Kumar assured, "but the efforts at the moment are focused on bringing back normalcy in the town within the next 24 hours."
DGP Kumar convened a meeting with district officials in Haldwani to gather their insights into the situation. Additionally, he visited hospitals where the injured were being treated and inspected the police station which had been targeted and vandalised during the unrest.
"A high alert has been sounded across the state following violence in Haldwani," Kumar noted, referencing the clashes that resulted in two fatalities and three critically injured individuals on Thursday.
