Cyclone Tauktae LIVE: Cyclone Tauktae has intensified into a severe storm and is charged towards Gujarat now. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to occur in coastal areas of Gujarat on May 17 & May 18. Extremely heavy rainfall is also expected at some places. At the time of landfall, winds speed is expected to be 155-165 kmph gusting to 145 kmph, as informed by IMD.
Indian Coast Guard Ship Samarth rescued 15 fishermen off the Goa coast and towed the boat Milad to safety. Another Coast Guard Ship Samrat sailed out from Mumbai to attend to a distress call from a vessel off Mumbai with 137 personnel on board.
Two more Indian Coast Guard Ships at sea have been diverted and directed to rush to Bombay High off Heera oil fields for rescue operations of the stranded crew onboard P-305.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday assessed the damage caused by cyclonic storm Tauktae in Mumbai and other districts in Konkan and asked officials to remain alert in view of the rainfall and gusty winds in the coastal region, where six persons died.
Under the influence of the extremely severe cyclonic storm, Mumbai and its adjoining districts were lashed by heavy rains and high-speed winds during the day.
According to an official statement, six persons died, while nine others received injuries in storm-related incidents in the coastal region.
Three persons died in Raigad district, while Thane and Sindhudurg districts reported two and one deaths, respectively, it said.
A total of 12,500 people were shifted to safer places as a precautionary measure, the statement said.
The statement said while damage to property was reported in the coastal and a few other districts, electricity supply to COVID-19 care centres there remained uninterrupted.
The chief minister took stock of alternate power supply system, the statement said.
Thackeray asked the district administrations to remove fallen trees and electricity poles from roads and ensure smooth vehicular movement.
The CM also reviewed the damage caused by the storm to boats of fishermen from the affected areas, the statement said.
The statement said the cyclone damaged 2,542 structures partially, while 6 got destroyed completely in Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Kolhapur and Satara.
Thackeray also held discussion with senior India Meteorological Department scientist KS Hosalikar and was told that the cyclone was 180km from Mumbais coast and its speed will get reduced to 70 km to 80 km per hour as the time progresses.
The cyclone will reach Gujarat between 8 pm and 11 pm on Monday and its speed is likely to be 175 km per hour, an official said, according to the statement.
The official said Mumbais suburbs received more than 120 mm rainfall, while the Colaba area (in the city) recorded 100 mm to 120 mm rainfall over the past six hours, the statement said.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation informed the chief minister that patients from three COVID-19 centres in Mumbai were shifted safely elsewhere.
The corporation said the work of removing uprooted trees and fallen electricity poles is on in the city.
The statement said an orange alert ((heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places) was issued for Mumbai in view of the cyclone and added air services at the city's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were suspended due to it. (PTI)

At least 17 COVID-19 patients on ventilator support in the Porbandar Civil Hospital's ICU were shifted to other facilities on Monday as a precautionary measure in view of cyclone Tauktae which is heading towards the Gujarat coast, an official said.
Since the ceiling of the Intensive Care Unit ward of the hospital is in a dilapidated condition and may fall off due to the adverse weather, 17 COVID-19 patients from the ICU ward were shifted to other medical facilities, in-charge civil surgeon Dr Alka Lakhani said.
Of these 17 patients, five were shifted to Junagadh and 12 to the Jamnagar Civil Hospital, she said.
As per the latest prediction of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the "extremely severe cyclonic storm Tauktae" is expected to cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva town in Bhavnagar district on Monday night.
In the Khambhalia Civil Hospital of Devbhumi-Dwarka district, where 120 COVID-19 patients are on oxygen support, authorities have installed two extra diesel generator sets to deal with power outage, officials said.
In Bhavnagar, all 35 private COVID-19 hospitals have already been instructed to install generators to run ventilators and other medical devices in case of power failure, they said.
In the Jamnagar Civil Hospital, around 45 COVID-19 patients lodged on the eighth and ninth floors of the facility were shifted to lower floors as a precautionary measure.
An extra generator set and an oxygen tanker were also kept on standby to deal with any emergency situation, officials said.
In the Union Territory of Diu, the administration has installed a 250 KV power generator at the civil hospital there in case the permanently installed generator fails, Diu health secretary A Muthamma said.
"Of the total 177 patients currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, 60 are on oxygen support. We have also kept two days of buffer stock of oxygen," she said.
The Met department has predicted a high tide alert in Mumbai after 2 pm and the tide is expected to rise upto 3.5 meters which might turn into an alarming situation. Gusty winds and rains lashed Mumbai and its neighbouring areas overnight and on Monday morning as the "very severe cyclonic storm" Tauktae was heading towards Gujarat, officials said.
There was no water-logging anywhere in the metropolis, but trees were uprooted at several places, they said, adding that no casualty was reported so far.
In view of the high speed winds, the Bandra-Worli sea-link was closed for traffic and people were asked to take alternate routes, a senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.
Local trains services of the Central Railway were disrupted between suburban Ghatkopar and Vikhroli as a tree branch fell on a train heading towards neighbouring Thane, a railway spokesperson said.
Efforts were on to restore the train movement on the route, he said.
As a precautionary measure, the monorail services in the city were suspended for the day, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said.
This was a "prompt decision" taken for the safety of commuters, the MMRDA said.

Cyclone Tauktae has killed 4 in Karnataka and 2 in Kerala. The four victims were from Udupi, Chikkamaglur, Shivmogga and Uttara Kannada. A total of 98 villages have veen affected by the cyclone Tauktae whereas 33 village have been affected in Uttar Kannada.
The IMD said Tauktae would cross Gujarat's coast between Porbandar and Mahuva in Bhavnagar district by early Tuesday morning and tidal waves are likely to inundate several coastal districts during the landfall. The sea conditions will become "very rough to high" along and off the south Gujarat coast from Monday morning, and "very high to phenomenal" from Monday midnight. A tidal wave of about 3 metres, 1-2.5 metres above the astronomical tide, is likely to inundate several coastal areas of the state during the time of the landfall, it said.
