Nearly 29,500 houses in 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards, mostly in the south coastal areas of West Bengal, were partially or entirely damaged by Cyclone Remal, a state government official said on Monday. Additionally, over 2,140 trees were uprooted, and about 1,700 electric poles fell in various parts of the state, he added.
Initial assessments indicate that out of the damaged houses, 27,000 suffered partial damage, while 2,500 were completely destroyed. The official cautioned that these figures might change as evaluations are ongoing, with data collection and damage estimation still in progress. (PTI)
West Bengal Power Secretary Santanu Basu told ANI, "South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hoogly, parts of Medinipur, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts have been affected by cyclone Remal the most. We started our restoration work early in the morning today... We have been able to restore 45 out of the 50 substations that were affected and 80% of the restoration work, be it in the substation level or in the downstream infrastructure with respect to the 33kV feeders or the 11 kV feeders has been restored. In certain areas in the North 24 Parganas, we have been unable to restore 6-7 substations because of the wind and rain... In South 24 Parganas we have been able to restore almost all the substations... We have engagements of additional gangs from the nearby districts which have moved to North and South 24 Parganas to help in fastening up the restoration."
NDRF carried out operations to clear the trees uprooted because of Cyclone Remal, earlier today.

"The adverse weather will continue to normalise in West Bengal. The wind speed is 70-80 kmph, it will reduce to 50-70 kmph by evening and 40-50 kmph by night. There would not be much impact afterwards. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected only today in eastern districts of WB. There is no forecast of extreme rainfall today. It will reduce tomorrow," he added.
In the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, at least three persons were injured and vehicular movement was disrupted in Kolkata as trees lay uprooted in several parts of the city.
Around 68 trees were uprooted in Kolkata, while another 75 trees were uprooted in nearby Salt Lake and Rajarhat area, PTI reported.

On cyclone Remal, IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty tells ANI, "... Today morning at 5:30 hours IST, a severe cyclonic storm Remal has formed over the north Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move northwestward with a speed of 7 km/hr. It will intensify further and move nearly northward and cross Bangladesh and the adjoining West Bengal coast between Sagar Island and Khepupara... There is not much impact on Odisha. But in coastal Odisha, we are likely to get light to moderate rain at many places with isolated heavy rainfall activity... The fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea till 27th May."
On a weather alert issued for Tripura, Secretary Disaster Management, Brijesh Pandey says, "It (cyclone Remal) is slowly moving towards North and it is likely to impact Tripura by night...We have already started preparation...On 24th May, once we got the information from IMD, we immediately issued guidelines and advisory to the district magistrate and collector to take preparatory steps...In addition, an urgent meeting of the state executive committee was held under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary which was attended by DGP, other senior officers from the secretariat as well as other field-level officers....Since there will be heavy rainfall tomorrow, we have decided Anganwadi centres will remain closed from tomorrow and the day after tomorrow and rations will be provided to kids at home...In addition, three teams of NDRF have been deployed...Further, the State Disaster Response Force has also been deployed." As cyclone Remal is set to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm in the next few hours, preparations are being carried out by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in Barrackpore in Bengal's North 24 Parganas. Cyclone Remal will cross between Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts around May 26 midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm, IMD stated.
Informing about Cyclone Remal, NDRF Eastern Region Commanding Officer, Gurbind Singh said: "The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has moved North. It has become a severe cyclonic storm. The landfall is expected between 12 pm to 6 am tonight. IMD has predicted a sustainable speed between 110-120 kmph. The gusting wind speed will be 135 kmph. Landfall is expected between West Bengal's Sagar and Bandladesh's Khepupara."
"The intensity will be severe. The roofs of Kachha Houses may get damaged. There would be waterlogging in low-lying areas. After the landfall, the cyclone will move North. There will be effect for 12-14 hours. The most affected will be South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and East Medinipur. The eye of the storm will hit Bangladesh. 14 teams of NDRF have moved," Singh added.e
In view of Cyclone Remal, the flight operations at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport have been shut down in Kolkata.
NDRF Inspector Kalicharan, while informing about the preparation in East Medinipur, West Bengal, urged people to follow the advisory issued in view of Cyclone Remal.
"The team has been deployed here. We will follow the instructions commanding officer. We will work hand in hand with the district administration. IMD said that the landfall is expected between 11 pm and 2 am. The wind speed is expected between 70-80 kmph in Medinipur. There would be an effect in adjoining areas. We have modern equipment. Volunteers will be there. Everybody should follow the advisory," the NDRF Inspector said.
Hours before Cyclone Remal will make its landfall tonight, Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju tweeted: "The Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) 'Remal' over North Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards, with a speed of 07 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 26th May 2024 over North Bay of Bengal near latitude 19.8°N and longitude 89.3°E about 260 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 310 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh), 240 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and 280 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal)."
The name cyclone 'Remal' was proposed by Oman, and the word means 'sand' in Arabic.
IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall very likely in most places, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over North Coastal Odisha on May 26.
Cyclone Remal, which is intensifying as it is moving northwards before making landfall at midnight between Bengal and Bangladesh, will imoact the northeastern states in India as well.
These include Assam and Meghalaya that are likely to receive extremely heavy precipitation, as forecast by the weather department. Additionally, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains on May 27 and 28.
As per IMD's forecast, Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur on May 26 and Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur on May 27 and 28 will likely receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The weather department also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 20 cm) likely over Assam, Meghalaya on May 27 and 28, Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday and Mizoram and Tripura on May 27.
The weather department has issued a rainfall warning in various places in West Bengal ahead of Cyclone Remal's landfall tonight. While most places will receive light to moderate rainfall, a few places in coastal districts of West Bengal and eastern districts of Gangetic West Bengal adjacent to Bangladesh will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 26 and 27. These coastal districts will receive isolated extremely heavy rainfall on May 26.
