Cyclone Michaung Live: Heavy Rain Disrupts Normal Life In Chennai, TN Governor Advises People To Stay Home

"Some of our Eastern Coastal Districts have been badly affected by Cyclone Michaung, and life has been disrupted. Agencies of the Center and the State have been deployed to ensure the safety of people and to maintain essential services. The situation is being monitored by the Central and State Governments at the highest level. I appeal to people to follow the advice of the State Government and stay home and stay safe until the situation improves," Tamil Nadu Governor said in a statement. 





5 Southern Odisha Districts On Alert

Five southern Odisha districts - Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam - were put on alert as the IMD issued Yellow Warning (be updated) of 7 cm to 11 cm rainfall on Monday and the intensity of rain (orange warning) is likely to increase in these areas on December 5.

Tamil Nadu:  Balachandran, Chennai Regional Metrology Director says, "Cyclone 'Michaung' lies about 100 km from East-North East of Chennai. In the last 6 hours, it has moved at the speed of 10 km/hr and it's expected to move in the northwest direction, intensified to severe cyclonic storm is expected by 4 noon today. Further, it will move parallel to the coast of north Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh, expected to cross Nellore- Machilipatnam by tomorrow at 4 noon. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are likely to continue till this evening in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts."

The India Meterological Department said that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Michaung' and is likely to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph. IMD's bulletin also stated that the system could result in heavy rains in most parts of southern Odisha and coastal region of the state.


The name Michaung (pronounced as migjaum) was suggested by Myanmar and it means strength or resilience. The system which moved northwestwards with a speed of 5 kmph during the past six hours and intensified into a cyclonic storm lay centered at 5.30 am about 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore, 550 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 550 km southsoutheast of Machilipatnam, the weather agency said.


It is likely to continue to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach the westcentral Bay Of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon.


"Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph," the bulletin said.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned countrymen on Sunday amid approaching 'Cyclone Michaung', saying that he was in constant touch with the governments of states on the eastern coast to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. He also urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration.


At least 11 express trains from Chennai Central were cancelled on Monday after the water level reached the danger mark at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge owing to heavy downpours. Several parts of Tamil Nadu’s Chennai received heavy rainfall as cyclone Michaung approached the coast.
