Cyclone Michaung: Mohsen Shahidi, DIG, NDRF says, "This is a severe cyclonic storm, and as per the information provided by the IMD, it will make a landfall between 11.30 am and 1.30 pm today. Because of this, a massive evacuation operation has been launched. In Tamil Nadu, 6,000 people have been evacuated. Meanwhile, 7,000 people have been evacuated in Andhra Pradesh."
Tamil Nadu government has sought an interim Central assistance of Rs 5,000 crore to provide relief to people and rebuild infrastructure damaged by incessant rains in Chennai and some other districts of the state. Raising the issue through a zero-hour mention in the Rajya Sabha, Tiruchi Siva, a leader of the ruling DMK, said heavy rains due to severe Cyclone Michaung have submerged Chennai and other districts.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday said that the state capital Chennai received more rain during Cyclone Michaung than 2015 floods. However, he added that the damages were less as compared to similar situations in the past. Addressing a press conference after the cyclone wreaked havoc in Chennai and adjoining districts, Stalin said the 2015 floods were manmade and this time it was a natural flood.
About 9,450 people were evacuated to safety as severe cyclonic storm Michaung is expected to make landfall close to Bapatla in south Andhra Pradesh coast within the next four hours.

It lies in 140 km south-west direction of Bapatla...in the coming 4 hours, ...near to Bapatla only it will cross as severe cyclonic storm..."
She said heavy downpour is expected around coastal Andhra Pradesh as an effect of cyclone Michuang.
Cyclone Michaung: According to the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, the severe cyclonic storm is currently 80 km to Nellore, 80 km to Bapatla, and 140 km to Machilipatnam.It will cross the coast near Bapatla before noon.
Authorities have asked people to be more alert.

The India Meterological Department said that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday intensified into a cyclonic storm 'Michaung' and is likely to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph. IMD's bulletin also stated that the system could result in heavy rains in most parts of southern Odisha and coastal region of the state.
The name Michaung (pronounced as migjaum) was suggested by Myanmar and it means strength or resilience. The system which moved northwestwards with a speed of 5 kmph during the past six hours and intensified into a cyclonic storm lay centered at 5.30 am about 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore, 550 km south-southeast of Bapatla and 550 km southsoutheast of Machilipatnam, the weather agency said.
It is likely to continue to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach the westcentral Bay Of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon.
"Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph," the bulletin said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi cautioned countrymen on Sunday amid approaching 'Cyclone Michaung', saying that he was in constant touch with the governments of states on the eastern coast to coordinate relief and rescue efforts. He also urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration.
At least 11 express trains from Chennai Central were cancelled on Monday after the water level reached the danger mark at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge owing to heavy downpours. Several parts of Tamil Nadu’s Chennai received heavy rainfall as cyclone Michaung approached the coast.
