Coronavirus Highlights: Sixty people have tested positive for COVID-19 in IIT Guwahati and its authorities have declared the entire campus as a containment zone, an official order said on Wednesday.
Amidst the spike in the covid cases, Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) administration has imposed fresh curbs. "There shall be a complete restriction on non-essential movement in the entire UT from 9 pm to 6 am till further orders," reads the official statement.
Delhi reports over 10,000 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hrs.
Sixty people have tested positive for COVID-19 in IIT Guwahati and its authorities have declared the entire campus as a containment zone, an official order said on Wednesday. All the cases were detected over the last six days and almost 99 per cent of the cases were those who had returned to the campus from outside Assam after the holidays, an IIT Guwahati official said.
More than 1 crore (1,24,02,515) COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered to children in the 15-18 age group since the inoculation drive began for them on January 3, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday. With this, the cumulative doses administered in the country has increased to over 148.58 crores (1,48,58,19,491), it said.

Forty one out of 60 COVID-19 infected passengers on board a cruise ship, which returned to Mumbai from Goa, have so far been shifted to institutional quarantine facilities, a civic spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The West Bengal government will now allow flights from New Delhi and Mumbai, the two cities witnessing a huge surge in Covid-19 cases, thrice a week instead of twice as was decided a couple of days ago , a senior official said on Tuesday.
From January 5, flights from the two metros will be allowed to come to the state on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, he said.
A communication from state Home Secretary BP Gopalika was sent to Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation Rajiv Bansal on Tuesday, the official told PTI.
"... this is to kindly inform that the matter was reviewed and that the state government is extremely sensitive towards the inconvenience that may be caused to the passengers but restrictions are absolutely essential for containment of COVID cases in the state," Gopalika wrote to Bansal.
"However, the incoming domestic flights from Mumbai and Delhi will be allowed thrice a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with effect from January 5, 2022 and the same will be reviewed again shortly depending upon the COVID situation in the state," the letter read.
The number of new coronavirus cases in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district recorded a nearly three-fold rise at 103 on Tuesday from 37 a day ago, taking the overall tally to 1,50,039, an official said.
Out of the 103 fresh cases of coronavirus, a majority - 87 - were found in Aurangabad city, he said.
As many as 1,46,209 patients have been discharged so far in the district, where the death toll stood at 3,656.
The number of active cases in the district shot up to 174 from 95 on Monday, the official said.
So far, 76.75 per cent of the residents in Aurangabad district have taken the first dose of coronavirus vaccines, while 39.86 per cent adult citizens are fully inoculated against COVID-19, he said.
In adjoining Nanded district, 29 new coronavirus cases were reported on Tuesday, up from 10 on Monday, while Latur logged 13 infections during the day, the official said.
Jharkhand continued to witness a surge with 2,681 fresh COVID-19 infections being reported on Tuesday, which is more than double of the cases reported on the previous day, pushing the virus tally to 3,57,965, a health department bulletin said.
Five districts of the state accounted for majority of the new cases, the bulletin said.
State capital Ranchi reported 1,196 fresh infections, followed by East Singhbhum (402), Bokaro (162), Dhanbad(181), and Koderma (152).
Jharkhand on the previous day had reported 1,057 fresh coronavirus cases.
Two more persons succumbed to the contagion on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 5,149, the bulletin said.
Currently, there are 7,681 active COVID-19 cases in the state.
Meanwhile, 34,51,35 people recuperated from the disease thus far, including 216 in the last 24 hours.
A total of 55,010 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, pushing the cumulative number of clinical examinations to 1,81,92,285.
With six travelers who had arrived in the state from the United Kingdom testing positive for Omicron infection, the tally of such cases in Goa rose to 11 on Tuesday.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane tweeted late at night that six more samples sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune had tested positive for Omicron variant of coronavirus.
"All six are travelers from the UK and are asymptomatic. Total cases 11, he said.
The first case of Omicron was detected in Goa on December 28.

New Delhi: Covid-19 cases increased by 6.3 times in the last eight days in India, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Wednesday said. The ministry also said that Omicron was the predominant circulating strain in the country.
Dr V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, said the precautionary Covid-19 vaccine dose would be the same vaccine as has been given previously. “Those who have received Covaxin will receive Covaxin, those who have received primary two doses of Covishield will receive Covishield,” he said.

India registered a single-day rise of 58,097 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in around 199 days, taking the total tally of cases to 3,50,18,358. The active cases were recorded above 2 lakh after around 81 days, according to Union Health Ministry data.
The country’s Covid death toll has climbed to 4,82,551 with 534 daily fatalities, the data stated.
Meanwhile, 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across 24 states and UTs. Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of 653 cases followed by Delhi at 464, Kerala 185, Rajasthan 174, Gujarat 154 and Tamil Nadu 121 cases.

The Bihar government has also imposed a night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am from January 6 till January 21. As per the government guidelines, gyms, parks, malls, religious places, cinema halls, and swimming pools will be closed till further orders. Schools till Class 8 will remain closed till January 21.
