Hyderabad Encounter HIGHLIGHTS: Families Of Accused In Shock, Victim's Father Says Justice Delivered
Ten days after the brutal gang rape and murder of a young veterinarian in Hyderabad, police on Friday shot dead all the four accused in an alleged exchange of fire near Shadnagar town of Telangana's Ranga Reddy district. Police said the accused were killed in retaliatory firing after they snatched weapons from the police and opened fire on them.
The accused were gunned down at a spot about 400 metres away from a bridge under which the accused had dumped the victim's body and set it afire on the night of November 27 after the gang rape near Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar said told reporters at the scene that the accused were brought to the spot around 5.45 a.m. by a 10-member police team to recover the mobile phone and other objects which they had hidden after burning the body.

Speaking to news agency PTI, locals said the four accused belonged to economically weaker families with poor literacy, yet earned well and led a lavish life-style spending on liquor and others.
According to people who know them, Chennakeshavulu was suffering from kidney ailment.
Parents couldn't control them as they were uneducated. But they were earning well and there was no accountability. They indulged in alcohol consumption from young age: a resident said.
The families of the four rape-murder accused were shell shocked on hearing the news of death of their wards in a police encounter on Friday with a grieving father asking whether his son deserved such a treatment.
Key accused Arif's mother was at a loss for words and could only say that her son is gone.
Arif's father had earlier said his son deserved the toughest punishment if he was guilty.
Grieving wife of Chennakeshavulu, Renuka, said police should kill her too as she is now all alone. They got married recently.
Jollu Ramappa said his son Shiva might have committed the crime, but didn't deserve such an end.

The Congress on Friday said that only after a magisterial inquiry a stand can be taken on the encounter of all the four men accused of raping and murdering a 25-year-old Hyderabad woman veterinarian last month.

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Friday said all four accused in the Hyderabad woman veterinarian rape-and-murder case getting killed in an encounter with police was the right thing and the victim had got justice.
Hyderabad gangrape accused killed. Whatever happened, howsoever it happened, but the right thing happened: Vij tweeted in Hindi.
‘Today, the police brought the accused to the crime spot as part of investigation. The accused then attacked the police with sticks and then snatched the weapons from us and they started firing on police,’ said Sajjanar.
‘The police warned them and asked them to surrender but they continued to fire. Then we opened fire and they were killed in the encounter. During encounter, two police men have been injured and they have been shifted to the local hospital,’ he said.

National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that the 4 accused, arrested by the police in connection with the rape and murder of veterinarian doctor in Telangana, have died in an encounter with the police this morning.
NHRC has asked its DG (Investigation) to immediately send a team for a fact finding on the spot investigation into the matter. The team of the Investigation Division of the Commission headed by an SSP, is expected to leave immediately and submit their report, at the earliest.
Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has raised questions over encounter of the rape accused of Hyderabad case and has asked for a probe in the matter. He said that whether or not the accused were trying to escape, is a matter of probe.
The bodies of the four accused will be sent for post-mortem in a while, sources have said. A panel of doctors has been set up for the post-mortem. Videography of the post-mortem procedure is also likely.
The bodies have been kept at the site of encounter, so far.
Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Friday described as ‘long due’ the encounter of the four men accused of the gang rape and murder of a veterinarian in Telangana.
Reacting to a question on the encounter in Parliament premises, Bachchan said: ‘Der aaye, durust aaye...der aaye, bohot der aaye.. (Better late than never)’.
She had earlier in Parliament advocated for the lynching of rapists.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said people are 'happy' over what has happened in Hyderabad but have lost faith in the criminal justice system.
Kejriwal was reacting to the encounter killings of four persons accused of raping and killing a veterinarian in Hyderabad.
'The governments and agencies need to sit together and discuss ways to strengthen the criminal justice system,' he said.
‘’While political leaders of different parties have voiced praises for the Hyderabad police alike, BJP MP Maneka Gandhi has said that whatever happened is not good for the country.
‘Jo hua hai bohot bhayanak hua hai desh ke liye. You can't take law in your hands,they (accused) would've been hanged by Court anyhow. If you're going to shoot them before due process of law has been followed, then what's the point of having courts,law and police?,’ she said.
As per sources a magistrate probe may be launched into the encounter of the accused of the Hyderabad veterinarian rape and murder case. The bodies of all the four accused will be sent for post-mortem. A panel of doctors will be set up for the post mortem.
According to Prakash Reddy, DCP, Shamshabad, Cyberabad, police last night brought the accused persons to Chatanpally, Shadnagar where the veterinary doctor was burnt. ‘The accused were brought for re-constructing the scene again. There at the spot while re-constructing the scene the accused snatched weapon and fired on us. Then in self defence the police had to cross fire and in the firing the accused were killed,’ he said.
Hundreds of people gathered at the site of encounter of all the accused in the Hyderabad veterinarian rape and murder case. People raised slogans like ‘Hyderabad Police Zindabad, and Telangana Police Zindabad.’
‘ The accused attempted to snatch the weapon of the police and tried to fire at the police team,’ said the DCP associated with the investigation of the case.
‘Crimes against women are on the rise in Uttar Pradesh, but the state government is sleeping.Police here and also in Delhi should take inspiration from Hyderabad Police,but unfortunately here criminals are treated like state guests, there is jungle raj in UP right now,’ she said.
‘It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. I express my gratitude towards the police and the government for this. My daughter's soul must be at peace now,’ said the victim’s father.
Delhi Commission For Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal hailed the encounter of the accused I the Hyderabad veterinarian gang-rape and murder case and said that the accused will not be the ‘government’s guests’ like in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
Talking to ABP News she said that her indefinite hunger strike will not come to an end after the killing of the accused in the case. ‘The protest is against the existing system, which does not tend to punish the culprits in such crimes immediately. Such incidents are going on across the country, justice needs to be delivered quickly in all such cases,’ she said.
‘I am happy with the way police has encountered all the four accused in the Hyderabad case. This will prove as an example for other cases. Police should not be questioned over this move,’ said Asha Devi, mother of the victim in 2012 Delhi gangrape case.
I have been struggling since 7 years for justice. I deeply regret the fact that the rapists of Nirbhaya are still alive, she said.

Hyderabad: More than a week after brutal gang rape and murder of a young veterinarian in Hyderabad, police shot dead all the four accused in an alleged 'encounter' near Shadnagar town of Telangana's Ranga Reddy district in wee hours on Friday. The accused were gunned down when they allegedly tried to snatch weapons from the police and escape. Police sources said they acted in self defence. According to reports, the incident occurred between 3 am and 5 am at Chatanpally near Shadnagar town, about 50 km from Hyderabad.
The accused were gunned down, about 400 meters away from a bridge under which the accused had dumped the victim's body and set it afire on the night of November 27 after the gang rape near Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
All the four accused were being taken to the spot by the Cyberabad police for reconstruction of crime scene as part of the investigations.
The four accused killed in the encounter were: lorry drivers Mohammed Arif (26), Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20) and lorry cleaners Jollu Shiva (20) and Jollu Naveen (20). All hailed from Narayanpet district of Telangana.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar and other senior officials rushed to the 'encounter' scene. As the news of the 'encounter' spread, people gathered near the scene, off the Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway. They raised slogans hailing the police.
The accused had committed the crime after trapping the accused near a toll gate on Outer Ring Road (ORR) by deflating one of the tyres of her parked scooty. When the victim came to pick up her bike, the accused approached to help her but raped and killed her.
Charred body of the victim was found under the Chatanpally bridge. The four were arrested by the police on November 29 and the next day a court in Shadnagar sent them to judicial custody for 14 days. They were subsequently shifted to the Cherlapally Jail in Hyderabad.
A court on Wednesday had remanded the accused to the police custody for seven days. The police believed to have taken them into custody on Thursday. This was done secretly as police was anticipating law and order problem due to possible protest by people.
Massive protest was held outside the Shadnagar police station on November 30 when the accused were about to be taken to the court. The protesters demanded that the accused be handed over to them. The magistrate had to be brought to the police station to send the accused into the custody.
The gruesome rape and murder had triggered nationwide rage with demands for immediate death penalty for the perpetrators. There have been protests all over the country. Many have demanded that the accused be hanged in public.
Speaking in Parliament, some MPs even called for lynching the perpetrators involved in the horrific crime. Telangana government on December 4 had set up a fast-track court in Mahabubnagar for speedy trial of the case.
