Follow the space to get all the latest information and news from in and around the world on COVID-19.The Union government has stated that COVID vaccination, including precaution doses, for individuals having lab test proven coronavirus infection will be deferred by three months after recovery.The directive came as officials sought guidance with respect to the administration of precaution doses for the eligible persons having contracted COVID infection.In a letter to all states and union territories, Union Health Ministry’s Additional Secretary Vikas Sheel stated that requests have been received from various quarters for guidance in regard to the administration of precaution dose to the eligible persons having COVID illness.In an important development, the Delhi government has laid down SOPs for COVID-19 cases.Labs giving real-time data to states, segregation of coronavirus patients on basis of districts and assembly constituencies are part of the SOPs laid down by the Delhi government.Under the SOPs, labs have been directed to give real-time data within 20 hours to the State COVID-19 Response Centre.They have been directed to segregate cases on the basis of districts, assembly names and wards, etc. This data will be published on the integrated management app.The tele-calling unit of the COVID-centre is responsible for calling up the patient within half-a-hour of testing positive, it said.With respect to other positive cases, all will be given a visit, in coordination with the CDMO, on the first day itself within four hours and time will be noted on software.There are 61,954 active cases in Delhi, of which 48,356 are in home isolation, according to government data.Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday extended the closure of educational institutions, including schools, till January 30 in view of rising coronavirus cases in the state.The closure of all educational institutions has been extended till January 30 and online classes will continue, according to an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi.The government had earlier ordered closure of the educational institutions till January 23 in view of a rise in COVID cases.In Andhra Pradesh, active cases increased to 73,143 but there was a slight dip in fresh infections. Andhra Pradesh recorded 12,926 new COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours ending 9 am on Saturday, taking the caseload to 21,66,194.According to the latest bulletin, there were 3,913 recoveries and six deaths during the period.The total recoveries now are at 20,78,513 and deaths 14,538, it said.Notably, Singapore on Saturday reported its first Omicron-related death, a 92-year-old unvaccinated woman who caught the virus from a family member, PTI reported citing Channel News Asia.The woman, who had no known medical history, died on Jan 20, about 10 days after catching the virus from a family member, the Channel News Asia reported."Upon investigation, doctors have concluded that the death was due to COVID-19 infection, by the Omicron variant," the report said, quoting a health ministry statement.The woman was unvaccinated and had no known medical history, the ministry said.

COVID: 30 more deaths in Punjab, 5,664 cases

Chandigarh, Jan 23 (PTI) Thirty more people died of COVID-19 in Punjab while 5,664 fresh coronavirus cases took the infection tally to 7,13,445, according to a medical bulletin issued on Sunday.

Seven deaths were reported from Ludhiana, five from Jalandhar, three each from Pathankot and Mohali, two from Hoshiarpur and one each from Amritsar, Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Muktsar, Patiala, Sangrur and Tarn Taran.

The toll reached 16,978. The number of active cases was 46,472.

Of the fresh cases, Mohali reported 1,084 cases, followed by 836 in Ludhiana, 703 in Jalandhar and 518 in Hoshiarpur.

A total of 1,130 patients are on oxygen support while 109 critical patients are on ventilator support, as per the bulletin.

A total of 7,660 people recovered from the infection, taking the number of those who have recovered to 6,49,995, the bulletin said.

Meanwhile, the Union Territory of Chandigarh reported 808 COVID-19 cases, taking the total count to 85,692.

With two more deaths reported in the city in the last 24-hours, the toll reached 1,102.

The positivity rate was 14.01 per cent.

The number of active cases in the city was 8,064 while the number of recoveries was 76,526.

Bengal logs 6,980 new COVID-19 cases, 36 fresh fatalities

Kolkata, Jan 23 (PTI) West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 19,65,245 on Sunday as 6,980 people tested positive for the infection, 2,211 less than the previous day, a health bulletin said.

Thirty-six fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 20,338.

Kolkata reported the highest number of 973 new cases, closely followed by 960 in neighbouring North 24 Parganas district.

Ten fatalities were registered in Kolkata, and six each in Howrah and Birbhum, the bulletin said.

The number of active cases declined by 13,474 to 1,10,183. As many as 20,418 more people were cured of the disease, taking the total number of recoveries to 18,34,724, it said, adding that the discharge rate improved to 93.36 per cent from 92.65 per cent on Saturday.

The positivity rate stood at 9.53 per cent, as 73,214 samples were tested for COVID-19, taking the total number of such clinical examinations to 2,27,79,724, it added.

Coronavirus LIVE: Sunday lockdown in Kerala, Only Emergency Services Allowed

The one-day lockdown to mitigate the rapid spread of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kerala began on Sunday with only emergency services being operated in the state, PTI reported. 

A high-level COVID review meeting had on Thursday decided that only essential services should be allowed on the two Sundays, that is, on January 23 and 30.

Shops selling essential items such as milk, newspaper, fish, meat, fruits and vegetables and provisions are allowed to function from 7 AM to 9 PM.

Most of the private vehicles kept away from the road except for those who were traveling for emergency purposes and that too after providing necessary documents proving the nature of emergency to the police.

Those who are traveling to airports or already booked tourist destinations can travel after showing necessary documents including tickets to the police officers who are engaged in vehicle checking across the state.

Only parcel services are allowed at hotels and medical stores, media houses and telecom-Internet services are allowed to function despite curbs.
