Delhi BJP chief urges L-G to end weekend curfew, odd-even rule of opening shops

New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta on Saturday urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal to end weekend curfew, odd-even based opening of shops as well as allow restaurants and gyms with 50 per cent capacity in the city.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) had on Friday allowed private offices to function with 50 per cent staff, but decided against lifting the weekend curfew and removing restrictions on opening of shops amid the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

The order came after the Lt Governor, who chairs the DDMA, turned down a proposal approved by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for lifting the weekend curfew and odd-even basis of opening of shops till further improvement in the coronavirus situation.

"Trading activities are lifeline of any city and due to the restrictions, these activities have badly suffered and traders are suffering huge losses. Thousands of people who work with them are facing salary cuts, while daily wage labourers are losing their livelihood," Gupta said in his letter to Baijal.

The BJP leader demanded Baijal to end the odd-even basis of shop opening system and withdraw weekend curfew, claiming the third wave of Coivid has subsided. Restaurants and gymnasiums too should be allowed to operate at 50 per cent capacity, he said.

"In the wake of rise in COVID-19 cases in Delhi, the DDMA headed by you had in public health interest imposed several restrictions on commercial activities here. Traders and general public of Delhi have fully cooperated and observed the restrictions," he said.

According to the Covid data released by the Delhi government, the spread of virus is now under control. The infection rate has reportedly now come down to single digit, the Delhi BJP said.

Moreover, public transport is running on full seating capacity and not reported any specific spread of infection, he pointed out.

"I request you to immediately convene a meeting of DDMA to review the restrictions and order withdrawal of odd-even system for markets along with lifting of weekend curfew, he said.

The Lt Governor had suggested that a decision about lifting weekend curfew and ending odd even system of shop opening should be discussed at the DDMA meeting after further improvement in the Covid situation in the city, sources at the L-G office had said.

Singapore reports first Omicron-related death

Singapore, Jan 22 (PTI) Singapore on Saturday reported its first Omicron-related death, a 92-year-old unvaccinated woman who caught the virus from a family member, according to a media report.

The woman, who had no known medical history, died on Jan 20, about 10 days after catching the virus from a family member, the Channel News Asia reported.

"Upon investigation, doctors have concluded that the death was due to COVID-19 infection, by the Omicron variant," the report said, quoting a health ministry statement.

The woman was unvaccinated and had no known medical history, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, Singapore on Friday reported 3,155 new COVID-19 infections, comprising 2,794 local infections and 361 imported ones, taking the nationwide tally to 307,813 since the start of the pandemic. One more person succumbed to the infection, pushing the death toll to 846.

On Friday, the government had said that Singapore is likely to see a significant wave of Covid-19 cases as the more infectious Omicron variant spreads through the community, which could strain its healthcare capacity.

Addressing a press conference, trade and industry Minister Gan Kim Yong, who co-chairs the multi-ministry task force handling the pandemic, said about 70 per cent of daily cases are now of the Omicron variant, which has become the dominant strain in place of Delta.

This proportion could be even higher -- close to 90 per cent or more, he was quoted as saying by The Straits Times newspaper.

The Union government on Friday said the isolation facility is not mandatory for the international travellers arriving from at-risk countries with effect from January 22.

The travellers from at-risk countries will have to submit their samples for post-arrival COVID-19 test at the point of arrival, which will be self-paid.

“Such travellers will be required to wait for their test results at the arrival airport before leaving or taking a connecting flight,” said the Union Health Ministry in its guidelines for international arrivals.

“If tested negative, they will follow home quarantine for seven days and shall undertake RT-PCR test on the eighth day of arrival in India,” the ministry added.

The Health Ministry said the travellers shall also be required to upload the results of repeat RT-PCR test for COVID-19 on the eighth day on the Air Suvidha portal, which will be monitored by the respective states and Union Territories.

“However, if such travellers are tested positive, their samples should be further sent for genomic testing at INSACOG laboratory network,” said the Health Ministry.

“They shall be treated/isolated as per laid down standard protocol,” the ministry added.

The Health Ministry said the contacts of such positive case should be kept under home quarantine monitored strictly by the concerned state government as per laid down protocol.

Meanwhile, with a decline in the daily COVID-19 cases, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Friday allowed private offices to function with 50 per cent staff but maintained that weekend curfew and other restrictions, including odd-even rule for opening shops in city markets will continue, an order said.

Delhi on Friday logged 10,756 COVID cases in a single day and 38 more fatalities due to the infection, while the positivity rate declined to 18.04 per cent. As many as 434 people have succumbed to the disease so far in January. Of the 61,954 active COVID cases in Delhi, 48,356 are recovering in home isolation.

With this, the city's COVID-19 tally rose to 10,28,715, while the death toll jumped to 16,512, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin said.

This was the third day in a row when daily COVID-19 cases have dropped in the financial capital.

With 12,913 more patients discharged during the day, the number of recovered cases jumped to 9,95,338, said the bulletin.

Mumbai's coronavirus recovery rate has increased to 97 per cent, while the case doubling rate has improved to 72 days, the BMC said.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government has decided to lift the weekend curfew imposed in view of the spike in coronavirus infections after Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai held a meeting with experts, Ministers, and officials.

However, the night curfew between 10 PM to 5 AM every day, and all other COVID curbs including 50 per cent capacity rules in cinema halls, pubs, clubs, restaurants, bars, hotels, and eating places will continue.
