Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS: Section 144 Imposed Across Maharashtra From Wednesday For 15 Days
The second wave of Coronavirus continues to be a cause of concern for centre as well as all the state governments. While in Delhi, coronavirus positivity rate rose sharply from 9.43% to 12.44% in a span of 24 hours, Maharashtra, a day after logging the highest 63,294 infections, reported 51,751 fresh Coronavirus positive cases and 258 fatalities on Monday. As per the state health department, Maharashtra's cumulative case tally now stands at 34,58,996. Witnessing the spike in number of Corona cases, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is likely to take call on complete lockdown in Maharashtra.
Amid surging coronavirus cases in India, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday made it clear that the government would not go for lockdowns in a big way and only resort to local containment.
"Even with the second wave, we are very clear that we are not going in for lockdowns in a big way. We don't want to totally arrest the economy. The local level isolation of patients, or households which have people in quarantines are the methods through which the crisis will be handled, the second wave will be handled. There shall not be lockdown," Sitharaman said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray also said that Section 144 (prohibitory orders) of the Criminal Procedure Code will be in force till the "lockdown-like" restrictions are in place.
Meanwhile, state government will provide three kg wheat and two kg rice free for the next one month to every poor and needy person while the coronavirus-induced restrictions are in place.
There is a shortage of medical oxygen and beds and the demand for Remdesivir has increased in Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray said, adding the Centre should help supply oxygen for coronavirus patients in the state by using Air Force planes.

Hospitals, insurance, medical stores, medicine dealers, vaccine manufacturers, transporters, mask manufacturers, animal husbandry-related, vet clinics, railways, bus, autos, consulates, pre-monsoon work, SEBI, telephone services, e-commerce services, media, IT services and petrol pumps.
From 8 PM tomorrow (14th April 2021), as part of the BreakTheChain movement, Section 144 will be enforced across Maharashtra for the next 15 days. During this time, unnecessary travel is to be prohibited.
All establishments, public places will remain closed except for essential services. "We are not shutting down public transport, but they will be used only for essential workers and in emergency/essential activities for the general public," CM Thackeray said.
While making the announcement, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray said that "we thought we had won the war against Corona but the fight is still on."
Thanking the frontline warriors for their efforts to contain the Covid-19 spread in Maharashtra, Thackeray said that the credit has to be given to doctors and people for reduction in cases in December 2020.
He said we could postpone board exams but this exam can't be deferred. The chief minister also stressed on the fact that the healthcare infrastructure has been overburdened.
Thackeray said he has requested the prime minister oxygen cyclinders in the state and if the army can fly it here.
"We are continuously upgrading our healthcare infrastructure but they are under pressure. There is a shortage of medical oxygen, beds and the demand for Remdesivir has also increased," Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray said while addressing people.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday announced that the national capital registered more than 13,500 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the highest ever single-day spike since the onset of the pandemic early last year.
"Delhi has fought against three waves of Covid-19 in the last one year but this fourth wave is more critical. I would appeal to all citizens to follow Covid protocols. I would also request private hospitals to cooperate with the Delhi government in this emergency situation and to increase their bed capacity for Covid-19 patients," the Chief Minister said while addressing a press conference.
There have been 18,021 new cases of corona in Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours. With this, the number of active cases in the state has gone up to 95,980. With 85 more deaths recorded yesterday, a total of 9,309 people have died from the infection. Yesterday, 2,18,965 samples were tested in UP.

In the view of upcoming festivals, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawathas shortened the night curfew. As per the announcement, the nigh curfew will be imposed from 10:30 pm to 5 am now. This is applicable for the areas where night curfew is already imposed, said Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
Witnessing continuous surge in the COVID-19 cases, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal urged the centre to cancel CBSE exams. Adderssing a press conference on Tuesday, Kejriwal said, "6 lakh children in Delhi are going to write CBSE exams. Nearly 1 lakh teachers will be a part of it. These can become major hotspots leading to large-scale spreading of Corona. Children's lives & health is very important to us. I request Centre to cancel CBSE exams."
"Some alternative methods could be thought of. Children can be promoted this time on the basis of either an online method or internal assessment. But CBSE exams should be cancelled," Chief Minister added.
Kejriwal further informed that authorities in the national capital are working on attaching banquet halls and hotels with large hospitals. The capacity of beds will also be increased soon. Hospitals may delay some planned surgeries and focus on emergency surgery. Moreover, the experts are examining each patient and a call will be taken if he/she can be cured at home.
"Previously people donated plasma actively. Once again, the demand has arisen and I appeal to people to donate plasma. We are like a family... We will fight together," CM Kejriwal added. he also appealed the people in the city "to not leave homes unless absolutely necessary".
In a bid to prevent profiteering, the Noida administration has set prices of Covid test and treatment. as per the state government’s directives the treatment in ICU for those with severe Covid will be capped to Rs 18,000 per day while treatment in ICU for severely sick patients will cost Rs 15,000 per day. NABH-accredited hospitals to charge Rs 15,000 for ICUs without ventilators. The cost of RT-PCR samples has been capped at Rs 900.

Noticing seven consecutive weeks of increasing Covid-19 cases and four weeks of increasing deaths globally, Director-general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned the world saying coronavirus pandemic is 'long from over'.
The WHO chief took a note of countries in Asia and the Middle East that have recorded large increases in Coronavirus cases and emphasied the public health measures of wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, testing, contact tracing, tracking and isolation.

Central Airmen Selection Board (CASB), Indian Air Force (IAF) has postponed the exam in view of increasing number of COVID 19 cases. In an official statement, Central Airmen Selections Board said, " In view of fresh restrictions imposed by various State Governments due to the current COVID situation, the Indian Air Force has postponed STAR 01/2021 automated e-Pariksha for Airmen scheduled from 18 Apr 21 to 24 Apr 21 to a later date. Further, updates will be uploaded on the CASB web portal https://airmenselection.cdac.in. Candidates are required to follow the web portal regularly.”

Meanwhile, DGCI has approved the use of Russian vaccine Sputnik V on Monday. It has been registered in India under the emergency use authorisation procedure.
