She cited "extraordinarily high Covid-19 caseloads and multiple variants circulating in the India".
Private hospital chains Apollo, Max and Fortis will start Covid shots for people between 18 and 44 from today, when vaccinations are opened to all adults across the country. Several states have said they cannot launch vaccinations for 18-plus people as planned as they do not have enough vaccine stocks.
Apollo said it would start these vaccinations at limited centres in the country.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday said the state is now prepared to deal with a third wave of the coronavirus with enough oxygen in stock.
He said Maharashtra would have seen nine to 10 lakh active coronavirus cases if the state government had not imposed new lockdown-like restrictions, Thackeray said. A complete lockdown may be necessary but “I don’t think we will reach that stage," he said.
