Bengal issues guidelines for private vaccination camps

Days after a fake vaccination racket was busted in Kolkata, the West Bengal health department on Saturday issued a detailed guideline to control and monitor Covid vaccination camps (CVCs) organised by private entities across the state.

The fake vaccination racket came to light after actor-turned-Trinamool Congress MP Chakraborty lodged a complaint suspecting that a camp in Kasba where she took the vaccine shot was fake. She found the camp suspicious when she received no official confirmation after taking the vaccine on Wednesday.

Debanjan Deb, the man who conducted the dubious vaccine camps impersonating as a Joint Commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, has been arrested.

The seven-page guidelines issued by the health department specifically mentioned that all camps other than the ones directly organised by the state government will need to take prior permission of the state health department and fix a nodal officer so that the health department can directly communicate with him/her regarding the vaccination camp.

The guidelines also asked all private CVCs to maintain a dynamic inventory of vaccines, disclosing the source of their supplies, cold chain mechanisms, day-to-day consumption of vaccine doses etc., besides submitting end of the day reports to the health department.

The nodal officer must submit a weekly report on safety and tolerability of the vaccine doses.

The private vaccination camps must extend support and cooperation to the health department with respect to facilitating a prescheduled monitoring visit of the CVC by the representatives of the health department.

In case of poor compliance or gross departure from the prescribed norms, the health department shall revoke the permission to run the CVC, the guidelines said.

A private CVC must submit a list of all the people who completed vaccination, i.e., received both the doses, every Sunday.

Jharkhand preparing for Covid third wave; each district to have 20-bed PICU facility

Preparation to tackle the anticipated third wave of coronavirus has gained momentum in Jharkhand. Chief Minister Hemant Soren is personally monitoring every development and issuing the directive to the concerned officials.

According to the information, 20 beds Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU) are being established in every district across the state. This time the state government is focusing on the special facilities for the children. The Chief Minister has directed the officials to establish child-friendly ICU beds in the government hospitals at the earliest.

The Chief Minister has also directed the officials to equip child wards with modern medical equipment so that patients in rural areas to be able to access the best possible and free of cost treatment in their locality.

Apart from general child wards, dedicated child wards are also being developed. These wards are equipped with infant ventilators, paediatric ventilators, Bubble CPAP, Radiant warmers, Oxygen supply facility and other necessary facilities.

Interestingly, the PICU wards are being painted with different kinds of child-friendly paintings.

Third Wave May Not be as Severe as 2nd Covid Wave

The third wave of Covid-19 could occur but it may not be as severe as the second wave, an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) study revealed.

The study was published in the peer-reviewed Indian Journal of Medical Research. “This study demonstrates plausible mechanisms by which a substantial third wave could occur, while also illustrating that it is unlikely for any such resurgence to be as large as the second wave,” the study said. However, the researchers also noted that the projections were subject to uncertainties and scaling up vaccinations is the only way to ‘mitigate against any eventuality’.

Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Sunday, June 27: A new coronavirus vaccine developed by Indian pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila will be available soon for those between 12-18 years of age, the central government said in an affidavit to the Supreme Court on Saturday.
