Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal To Visit US Today For IPEF Meet:

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to San Francisco from November 13-16 to attend the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) ministerial meeting, where pacts on topics such as supply chain resilience will be negotiated.

On May 23, the US and other Indo-Pacific region partner countries launched the IPEF, a group of 14 countries. These countries account for 40% of global GDP and 28% of global goods and services trade.

The commerce ministry announced last week that the minister would also attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. He will also meet with prominent business leaders, academics, US officials, and industry leaders to further strengthen economic and commercial ties between the two countries.

"The minister will participate in the third in-person IPEF Ministerial meeting from November 13-14, 2023, which is likely to see significant updates on the progress of negotiations," the statement said. IPEF is organised around four pillars: trade, supply chains, clean economy, and fair economy (issues such as taxation and anti-corruption). Except for the trade pillar, India has joined the three pillars. The supply chain resilience talks have already concluded, and the process for domestic approval in India for this agreement is underway.

The member countries are currently negotiating separate agreements on these topics. The bloc includes Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

On the sidelines of the ministerial meeting, Goyal will meet with US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, and Ministers from other IPEF partner countries. "These meetings will focus on addressing trade barriers, promoting investments, and fostering greater cooperation in areas such as technology and innovation," the ministry said in a statement.

Delhi's AQI Likely To Worse From Today:

Due to consistent winds, the national capital had the cleanest Diwali eve air since 2015. The air quality improved further, with the AQI at noon falling to 224 by 4 PM. The average AQI in Delhi on the eve of Diwali was 220, compared to 259 on the same day last year. According to a Times of India report, all regions of the city avoided the'very poor' category of air quality.

The AQI remained in the'severe' category from November 3 to 9, but unexpected and unseasonal rains brought a sigh of relief to the national capital. After receiving rain on Thursday and Friday, the smog-covered skies became bluer and clearer.

However, the air quality is expected to worsen again on Sunday due to Diwali celebrations, according to the early warning system. According to the alert system, "The air quality is likely to reach the 'severe' category from November 13 to 14 and is likely to stay in the severe-very poor range for the next six days."

The biomass burning contributed 10% to the overall PM2.5 levels on Saturday, but it is expected to rise to 29% on Sunday, according to the IITM's decision support system. On Diwali Eve, transport contributed 14.7% of total PM2.5 emissions.
