A temporary sanitation worker was swept away on Saturday morning while cleaning the Amayizhanchan canal in the heart of the state capital, police said.
Joy, along with two other workers, was engaged in cleaning the Thampanoor part of the canal when the water flow increased due to heavy rainfall.
"As the flow increased, we got out of the canal, but Joy couldn't," one of his co-workers said.

IMD Issues Red Alert For Raigad, Ratnagiri; Predicts Extremely Heavy Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert on Saturday for the coastal districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri, as well as Kolhapur and Satara in the western region of Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on July 14.
For Thane district, the IMD has issued an 'orange alert' for Sunday and a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs with a chance of very heavy rainfall in isolated areas.
A red alert was already in place for Raigad and Ratnagiri for Saturday.
According to the IMD prediction, Satara and Kolhapur are expected to experience extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in the ghat areas and moderate rain in the plains on Sunday. A yellow alert has been issued for the rest of the state.
IMD scientist Sushma Nair mentioned that monsoon activity has intensified since July 11 and is expected to continue for the next two to three days.
Amit Shah To Take Part In Mega Sapling Plantation Drive In Indore
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to participate in a significant tree-planting initiative on Sunday in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, during which a record 11 lakh saplings will be planted in a single day, according to former BJP MLA Akash Vijayvargiya.
"Amit Shahji is expected to arrive in Indore at noon and offer prayers at a temple. Following this, he will plant a sapling. He will then proceed to the BSF's Revati Firing Range on Indore-Ujjain Road at 12:40 pm to plant another sapling. The initiative's goal is to plant 11 lakh saplings in one day," he stated, PTI reported.
During his visit to Indore, Shah is to inaugurate 'PM Colleges of Excellence' in 55 districts of the state at a function held at Atal Arts & Commerce College near Bhawarkuan Square, the former MLA added.
