SC To Hear Plea Of AAP Seeking Mayoral Election In MCD

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi and others filed a request to have the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral election held earlier. The Supreme Court agreed to hear the request. on Wednesday.

A lawyer representing the AAP made submissions to a bench composed of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha, and JB Pardiwala, requesting an immediate hearing of the plea.

The CJI stated, "We will list it tomorrow."

The presiding officer said that the aldermen nominated by the LG would vote in the polls on Monday, causing the MCD House to fail to elect a mayor for the third time. This caused an uproar, and an enraged AAP announced that it would petition the Supreme Court.

The appointment of aldermen and their right to vote in the House have been at the center of contention between the BJP and AAP, who have accused each other of obstructing the mayoral elections. The AAP, with 134 of the 250 elected members, has claimed that the BJP was attempting to steal its mandate by granting voting rights to the members who had been nominated.
