SC To Hear Pleas Challenging ‘Ban’ On BBC’s Modi Documentary

The Supreme Court will hear two petitions opposing the "ban" on the BBC documentary "India: The Modi Question," on Friday, Live Law reported. The matter will be heard by a bench composed of Justices MM Sundresh and Sanjiv Khanna. Journalist N Ram, TMC leader Mahua Moitra, and Advocate Prashant Bhushan submitted one petition; Advocate M L Sharma submitted the other plea.

The supreme court had previously agreed to list the case for February 6 hearing.

The documentary was found to be "undermining the sovereignty and integrity of India" and has "the potential to adversely impact" the country's "friendly relations with foreign states" and "public order within the country," according to officials, who issued an order on January 20 instructing YouTube and Twitter to remove links to the documentary.

The film focuses on Modi's and the state government he led at the time's response to the riots in Gujarat in 2002.

The January 20 order was challenged in Sharma's PIL as "illegal, malafide, arbitrary, and unconstitutional." It requested that the court examine the evidence and take action against individuals who were both, directly and indirectly, responsible for the riots in Gujarat in 2002.
