Cyclone Michaung To Reach Tamil Nadu By Dec 3
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange signal for Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh, signifying heavy rain owing to a low-pressure region along the Bay of Bengal's southeast and nearby areas. The National Weather Service has issued a rain advisory for Sunday and Monday.
According to MD Sunanda, Director of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, this depression is predicted to strengthen into a deep depression and then into a cyclonic storm during the next 48 hours, according to ANI.
According to the IMD, the depression over the Bay of Bengal has developed and is on track to become a Cyclonic Storm called 'Michaung' by Sunday.
"The depression is likely to intensify into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and further into a cyclonic storm over the southwest Bay of Bengal by December 3. Thereafter, it would move northwestwards and reach near south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon," the IMD in its release said.
The storm's ferocity is expected to hit the shores of south Andhra Pradesh and, in particular, the north Tamil Nadu region. The approaching storm is forecast to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the morning of December 5, with maximum sustained winds of 80-90 kmph and wind gusts of up to 100 kmph.
"Thereafter, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5 as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph," the IMD's release added.
