Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind demanding President's Rule in West Bengal on the backdrop of a retaliatory arson in Birbhum district after a deputy Panchayat chief was killed in a crude bomb attack.
Chowdhury urged President Kovind to invoke Article 355 of the India Constitution in Birbhum, citing the "deteriorating law and order situation" in the state ruled by Mamata Banerjee and 26 political killings in the last month.
A policeman was injured in a grenade attack by militants in Rainawari area of Srinagar the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Militants hurled the grenade towards the security personnel near Zind Shah mosque this evening

A group of senior journalists from all over India issued a collective appeal to constitutional institutions on Wednesday to step in and discharge their mandate in the wake of "attacks" on India's religious minorities, especially Muslims.
In the appeal, 28 senior journalists and media persons expressed concern over "hysteria" being built up nationwide that "Hinduism is in danger" and portrayal of Muslims as a "threat".
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Wednesday attacked the BJP over the "postponement" of municipal elections, saying the AAP will quit politics if the saffron party gets these polls conducted timely and wins them.
His remarks came after the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a bill to unify the three civic bodies -- North, East and South -- in Delhi.
"We (the AAP) will leave politics if BJP gets the MCD polls held (timely) and wins them," Kejriwal told reporters outside the Delhi Assembly.

"Lalu Prasad Yadav Ji is undergoing treatment in AIIMS, Delhi. His creatinine level was 4.5 when he was in Ranchi. It increased to 5.1 when it was tested in Delhi. It reached 5.9 when tested again. So the infection is increasing," Tejashwi Yadav, RJD leader and son of Lalu Yadav said.

US President Joe Biden will announce new Russia sanctions while in Brussels, report AP. Biden plans to announce new sanctions against Russia on Thursday while in Brussels for meetings with NATO and European allies, according to a top national security aide.
Biden, who will take part in a special meeting of NATO and address the European Council summit, is also expected to underscore efforts to enforce the avalanche of existing sanctions already announced by the U.S. and allies.
“He will join our partners in imposing further sanctions on Russia and tightening the existing sanctions to crack down on evasion and to ensure robust enforcement,” said White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who declined to further preview new sanctions the president will announce.

Pushkar Singh Dhami has been confirmed to take oath as Uttarakhand Chief Minister on Wednesday at 2:30 pm, reported news agency ANI. The event will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other union ministers as well.
Along with Dhami, his cabinet will also be administered the oath. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Parade Ground in Dehradun.
The Union cabinet held a meeting on Tuesday and gave its nod to present a bill in the Parliament for the unification of the three municipal corporations in Delhi.
The Cabinet approved 'The Delhi Municipal Corporation Amendment Act 2022'. The amendment act provides for a unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi by subsuming the existing three corporations.
According to ABP News sources, the central government will present the bill in Parliament during the ongoing Budget session 2022.
Meanwhile, Delhi was found to be the most polluted capital in the world for the fourth consecutive year in 2021 and 35 of the 50 cities with the worst air quality were in India, according to a new report.
In 2021, none of the cities in India met the prescribed World Health Organization air quality standards of 5 micrograms per cubic meter, stated the World Air Quality Report 2021, prepared by Swiss organization IQAir and released globally on Tuesday.
India's Covid Tally
In covid related news, India has reported 1,581 new Coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours and 2,741 people recovered from the virus on Monday. With the addition of new infections, the country's active caseload now stands at 23,913.
The active cases stand at 0.06% of the total number of infections recorded in the country. The recovery rate is currently at 98.74%.
With the continuous decrease in cases, the daily positivity rate of the country has dipped to 0.28% while the weekly positivity rate now stands at 0.39%.
Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Amidst the rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ordered the suspension of 11 parties with alleged “links to Russia”, media reports said.
The largest of these parties, the Opposition Platform for Life, has 44 out of 450 seats in Ukraine’s parliament and is led by Viktor Medvedchuk.
Medvedchuk is said to have friendly ties with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. Also, Putin is said to be the godfather of Medvedchuks daughter, a report by The Associated Press (AP) stated. Other parties who have been suspended include the Nashi (Ours) party, which is led by Yevheniy Murayev. Before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, British authorities had warned that Russia wanted to install Murayev as the leader of Ukraine, the report stated.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began about a month ago, an estimated 6.5 million people have been displaced within the nation, while another 3.2 million have fled owing to safety concerns.
