PM Modi To Dedicate 2 Key Rail Lines In Gujarat To Nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate two key railway lines in poll-bound Gujarat to the nation on Monday, officials said.

These are the section of the Asarva (Ahmedabad)-Himmatnaga-Udaipur Gauge Converted Line and the Lunidhar-Jetalsar Gauge Converted Line.

The entire 299-km stretch of the Ahmedabad (Asarva) – Himmatnagar –Udaipur section has been completed at Rs 2,482.38 crore. Major stations on this section are Ahmedabad, Shamlaji Road, Himmatnagar, Nandol Dahegam, Dungarpur, Prantij and Udaipur.

"This section will be a great relief to the locals of these areas in terms of connectivity to the rest of the country. It will also benefit tourists, traders, manufacturing units and industries around this region.

"The tiles and ceramics industries in Himmatnagar can reap the benefit of this rail project as they can seamlessly transport their wares to customers across the country," the Railways said.

It also said that his line will aid industrialization in the region by providing better connectivity to Delhi and Mumbai.

SC To Hear Plea To Replace Party Symbols On EVMs With Candidate's Details

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a plea seeking a direction to the Election Commission to remove party symbols from ballots and electronic voting machines (EVMs) and put age, educational qualification and photograph of candidates instead.

The plea said such a move will help electors vote and support intelligent, diligent and honest candidates and "control the dictatorship of political party bosses in ticket distribution".

The petition is likely to come up for hearing before a bench comprising Chief Justice U U Lalit and Justices S R Bhat and Bela M Trivedi, according to the cause list of October 31 uploaded on the apex court website.

The plea filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has also sought directions to declare that the use of party symbol on EVM is illegal, unconstitutional, and violative of the Constitution.

The plea, filed through advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey, said the best solution to weed out corruption and criminalisation in politics is to replace political party symbols on ballot and EVM with name, age, educational qualification and photograph of the candidates.
