The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of Chief Justice Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan of the Madras High Court, to the Supreme Court. A woman was allegedly hacked to death by an unidentified assailant while she was sleeping in the courtyard of her house in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur in the early hours of Thursday, police said, as reported by news agency PTI. The incident took place in Maganganj village in Gosaiganj police station area.
The victim, Zarina (45), was found dead by her family members, said Additional Superintendent Police (ASP) Arun Chandra. "It appears that she was attacked with an axe. It is suspected that she was killed by someone in her family," said ASP Chandra.
An investigation is underway and the body has been sent for post-mortem, he said. According to Zarina's family members, she was sleeping in the courtyard of their house and they found her decapitated body early Thursday.

A passenger bus collided with a pickup truck along a highway in Cagayan province in the northern Philippines early Thursday, killing at least 11 people and injuring six others, police said.

Rising water levels in major rivers have affected 7,97,176 people in 633 villages across 12 districts of Uttar Pradesh, news agency PTI reported, citing authorities.

3.5 Km Stretch Of Mumbai Coastal Road To Open For Vechicles Today
A 3.5km-long stretch of the north-bound carriageway of Mumbai Coastal Road is ready to be opened to vehicular traffic from Thursday onwards, the city civic body sad on Wednesday.
However, the vehicles will not be able to access the stretch from Haji Ali to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli on Saturdays and Sundays, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated in a release.
In the release, the BMC said the 3.5km-long stretch, which is part of the about 12km Mumbai Coastal Road Project, will be opened at 7 am.
"Vehicles can access the carriageway from Monday to Friday between 7 am and 11 pm.This corridor is being opened temporarily for vehicles going to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from Coastal Road and will remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays for completion of the remaining work of the project," said the release.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday inspected the stretch in the presence of Bhushan Gagrani, the municipal commissioner and other senior officials.
Shinde stated that 91 per cent of the coastal road project is complete and that the administration has been directed to finish the remaining work at the earliest.
The BMC, in the first phase, opened a 9.5km-long south-bound corridor of Coastal Road from Bindu Madhav Chowk in Worli to Marine Drive on March 11, this year.
Subsequebtly, a 6.25km-long north-bound carriageway between Marine Drive and Lotus Junctionn at Haji Ali was opened in the next phase on June 10.
Vice President Dhankhar To Address Maharashtra Legislature Today
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will address a joint sitting of Maharashtra legislative assembly and council on Thursday at 4 pm.
"The address, scheduled for 4 PM in the assembly, is part of the centenary celebrations of the legislative council and marks the final session of the 14th state assembly," officials stated on Tuesday.
The assembly elections in Maharashtra are due in October this year.
Dhankhar, who is also the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, will deliver his speech in the assembly chamber since the central hall is unavailable due to ongoing preparations for the council polls for 11 seats set to be held on July 12, PTI reported.
