Pulwama Attack: At least 39 CRPF personnel were killed and 35 injured in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Thursday when a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the bus they were travelling in. Over 2,500 jawans were part of the 70-vehicle CRPF contingent of its three battalions.

Suicide attacker rammed his vehicle around 3.15 p.m., taking the security forces completely by surprise. The convoy started from Jammu around 3.30 am and was supposed to reach Srinagar before sunset, officials said. The number of personnel travelling back to the Valley was high as there was no movement on the highway for the last two to three days because of bad weather and other administrative reasons, they said.
Usually, about 1,000 personnel are part of a convoy but this time it was a total of 2,547 personnel, PTI quoted officials as saying. A road opening party was deployed and the convoy had armoured counter-terror vehicles. The bus that was the focus of the attack belongs to the 76th battalion of the force and had 39 personnel on board.

According to sources, Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed it was a fidayeen attack. A vehicle full of explosives rammed into the bus of a CRPF convoy.
Sources said the death toll could rise as some of the injured Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were in a serious condition.
The IED blast was so powerful that it reduced the bus to a mangled heap of iron. The vehicle was blown up on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Awantipora area of the district.
