President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to decide the council of ministers and the date of his swearing-in ceremony. The president also appointed Modi to the office of Prime Minister of India, a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said. Kovind requested Modi to advise him about the names of others to be appointed members of the Union Council of Ministers; and
indicate the date and time of the swearing-in ceremony to be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, it said.
Modi was formally intimated when he called on the president at the Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening in his capacity as the leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party, which has majority support in the House of the People following the general election to the 17th Lok Sabha, the communique said.
An NDA delegation handed over to the President a letter stating that Narendra Modi had been elected leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party. Letters of support from NDA constituent parties were also handed over to the President.

Congress won only 3 seats in three states -- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh -- where it formed governments in December 2018.




'The chief ministers and party incharges from these three states will answer for the debacle and issues that needs to be prioritised in their respective states,' the source added.
Heads have already started rolling after the party managed to win only 52 seats in the lower house, only eight more than 2014. Congress Uttar Pradesh in-charge Raj Babbar resigned from the post on Friday, along with campaign committee chief H.K. Patil, Odisha party chief Niranjan Patnaik and Amethi District Congress President Yogendra Misra.




In Uttar Pradesh, the party failed to even retain the Gandhi bation of Amethi, where Rahul Gandhi lost to Union Minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani by a margin of over 55,000 votes.




In Karnataka, the party won only one seat with senior party leader Mallikarjun Kharge losing by a huge margin.
Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, who has taken '100 per cent responsibility' for the defeat, is likely to offer his resignation before the top decision-making body of the party.



Out of the 23 CWC members, only four won in the just concluded elections -- party chief Rahul Gandhi, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi and A. Chella Kumar.




The 12 other CWC members, who lost the polls, include heavyweights like Mallikarjun Kharge, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat, former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Raghuveer Singh Meena, Jitin Prasada, Deepender Hooda, Sushmita Dev, K.H. Muniyappa and Arun Yadav.




Seven CWC members did not participate in the Lok Sabha elections this year.

Chandigarh: Over 41,000 voters pressed the none of the above (NOTA) button in the Lok Sabha polls in Haryana where the ruling BJP won all 10 seats.


The share of NOTA in Haryana was 0.68 per cent of the total votes polled, as per the Election Commission data.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's re-election for a second five-year term drew a mixed response from the media in Pakistan with some calling it an empathetic mandate based on national security while others terming it a global trend of right-wing populists sweeping to victory.




Surprisingly the anti-Modi sting in the media was missing as for many outlets it was not an unexpected outcome of the elections.




There was also no use in regular reporting of threat to Muslims and minorities by Modi or his BJP. However, analysis and editorial did highlight such threats.




The element of in-depth coverage of elections followed by deep analysis was missing as almost all papers and other media outlets were dependent on news agencies in absence of dedicated reporting teams in India.




Dawn in a front page report wrote that Modi won an emphatic mandate in general elections that saw him pitching national security as an invincible talisman.

The Mamata Banerjee-led party had won 34 parliamentary seats in the state in the 2014 general elections. BJP made huge strides in West Bengal by garnering 18 seats, 16 more than it had won in the 2014 polls, thereby breaching the once Left-ruled bastion and now the TMC citadel. Congress, on the other hand, managed to win just two seats while Left parties drew a blank.
Manoj Sinha, a dhoti-clad civil engineer from the prestigious Banaras Hindu University and three-time MP, seems to have fallen victim to caste equation as he lost from the Ghazipur constituency in eastern Uttar Pradesh by a margin of 1.19 lakh votes.





Sinha, who was Telecom Minister in the Narendra Modi government, lost to Afzal Ansari, the brother of don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari. Ansari was the joint candidate of the 'mahagathbandhan' (BSP-SP-RLD alliance).



Sinha got 4.46 lakh votes as compared to BSP's Ansari who received 5.66 lakh votes.




Sinha had won this seat in 2014 by a margin of 32,452 votes.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has effected a redrawing of its support base that now spreads beyond the Hindi heartland to include at least 10 states that form its core.




The results of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections show that Middle India is now firmly in the BJP's kitty and comprises Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.




There are two noteworthy states on this list -- Odisha and West Bengal, ones outside the Hindi heartland but now part of the BJP's support base. Thus far they had been islands, ringfenced from direct BJP influence because of some essential cultural differences between what comprised the way of life of traditional BJP supporters and people in these states. That wall has been breached with these elections.
The BJP, which retained all the five Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand with huge victory margins, also got more than 60 per cent of the vote share this time, the highest by any party in the history of the hill state.





The BJP had captured 55.30 per cent of the total votes cast in the state in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls but this time got 61.0 per cent votes, increasing its vote share by 5.70 percentage points.

About 8000 voters opted for the none of the above (NOTA) button in elections to the Baramulla Parliamentary constituency of Jammu and Kashmir which was won by National Conference's Mohammad Akbar Lone.





In Baramulla constituency of north Kashmir, 7999 voters pressed the NOTA button, an election official said.




He said NOTA secured 1.79 per cent of the total votes polled in the constituency.




The NOTA secured more votes than four of the nine candidates who were in the fray in the constituency, the official said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several union ministers, BJP chief Amit Shah, Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi are among key leaders who contested the polls. Most of the exit polls have predicted that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is on course to retain power for a second term. However, the opposition parties have trashed results of the exit polls, claiming that the BJP will suffer severe drubbing due to rising unemployment, farm distress and slowdown in the economy.

Live Election Result: The counting exercise is on in over 4,000 counting centres amid concerns raised by opposition parties over alleged tampering of EVMs. They have asked the Election Commission to ensure transparency in counting. Election Commission officials said results are expected only by late evening.

Odisha: Congress candidate from the Aska assembly seat Manoj Jena was critically injured on Wednesday evening after four unidentified miscreants opened fire at him in Lanjipalli area, police said. The incident took place under the Biadyanath Pur police station here when Jena along with his associate was riding a motorcycle, they said.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 23, led his Bharatiya Janata Party to a super-sized victory for a second term in office, as his message of nationalism, security, Hindu pride and a New India was wholeheartedly embraced by voters across large swathes of the country.


The BJP got an absolute majority bagging 290 of the 511 seats, results of which were declared this morning and was on course to touch the 300-seat mark in the 542-member Lok Sabha. Leading in another 13 seats, the BJP has already surpassed its 2014 performance when it won 282 seats.


With the elections establishing the 68-year-old Modi as the most popular leader in decades, the BJP and its allies in the National Democratic Alliance(NDA) are poised to clinch around 350 seats as against their previous 336.


Such was the force of the BJP wave that even Congress President Rahul Gandhi lost in his bastion of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh to Smriti Irani, but in consolation prize won the Wayanad seat in Kerala. Former prime minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda also bit the dust when he lost the Tumkur seat in Karnataka where the BJP bagged 25 of the 28 seats.


After Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Modi is the third prime minister of the country and the first non-Congress one -- who has been able to retain power for a second term with full majority in Lok Sabha. The victory margin left the combined opposition in the dust, with the Congress Party topping the group winning or leading in 52 seats, according to the partial results.
