Thiruvananthapuram: Over 69,000 birds including ducks and chicken were culled in the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam to contain the H5N8 strain of bird flu, Kerala Animal Husbandry Minister K Raju said on Wednesday.
The minister said 61,513 birds including ducks and chicken have been culled in Alappuzha while 7,729 were culled in Kottayam.
Culling of ducks, hens and other domestic birds in and around one km radius of the affected areas in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts will be conducted as per the guidelines issued by the government.
The operation was launched after results of the samples tested at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal confirmed the outbreak of the bird flu in the two districts.
The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday deployed multi-disciplinary teams to bird flu-affected Alappuzha and Kottayam districts of Kerala, and Haryana's Panchkula district.
Two multi-disciplinary teams comprising experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), National Institute of Virology, PGIMER Chandigarh, RML Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College in New Delhi, have been deployed to the affected districts on January 4 to assist the health departments of the states in implementing the health ministry's avian influenza containment plan, reported news agency PTI.
The sale of chicken has been prohibited in Agar in the wake of reported bird flu cases. Legal action will be taken against those found violating norm: Agar Municipal Corporation.

The Animal Husbandry Department in Delhi hass been put on alert after bird flu caseswere reported in neighboring states. According to department officials, in addition to following the guidelines issued by union government, a team of doctors is conducting regular surveillance.
A rapid response team has been formed in all 11 districts to provide information about bird flu in the city immediately.
Apart from this, 48 doctors of the Animal Husbandry Department are also supervising different areas throughout the national capital.
According to the officials, no such case has been reported so far in Delhi. If something surfaces, a team of doctors will collect the sample and send it to the lab.
Kerala's state government has committed to providing compensation to the farmers who have been affected by the bird flu. Rs 200 each will be given to owners of birds that are older than 2 months and Rs 100 each for birds less than 1-month-old.
The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to ban chicken trade with a few South Indian states for a short period because of the bird flu outbreak, a government official revealed on Wednesday. The states have not been specified.
Authorities in Punjab have directed officials to be alert over any unusual deaths of migratory or poultry birds in the state as the bird flu scare has risen in the country.
No cases of bird flu have been reported in the state so far. The advisory has been issued after other states detected cases in the past few days.
The state’s animal husbandry director Harbinder Singh Kahlon said that an advisory has been issued for “surveillance of commercial and backyard poultry farms to find detect any unusual mortality in birds.
The advisory was sent to all 22 deputy directors of the department to ensure the regular visit of field staff to poultry farms in the state, Kahlon added.
In cases of any unusual mortality found in poultry farm birds, the samples will be sent to the Northern Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL), Jalandhar, to determine the cause.
At present, culling is the only way to contain avian flu in poultry.
As per All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS), poultry and poultry products can be prepared and consumed as usual, with no fear of acquiring infection with the avian flu virus. One should continue to follow good hygienic and cooking practices. The virus is destroyed at a temperature of 70 degree C for 30 minutes. After handling poultry and eggs, one should wash hands and other exposed parts with soap and water.
Eggs should be cooked until the yolks and whites are firm and should never be served runny.
Avian influenza, or “bird flu” or “avian flu” is an infection caused by avian influenza viruses. These flu viruses occur naturally among birds. Though most of the wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, they do not get sick from them. It is highly contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens and ducks sick and ultimately kill them.

Bird Flu Live Updates: 40,000 birds to be culled in Kerala:
Several parts of Kerala reported the outbreak of avian influenza prompting the authorities to order culling of ducks, hens and other domestic birds within one km radius of the affected areas in Kottayam and Alappuzha districts. Officials said some 40,000 birds will have to be culled to check the spread of the H5N8 virus.
A farm in Kerala's Kottayam has recently seen deaths of around 1,500 ducks due to bird flu recently.
Influenza Virus: 1800 migratory birds dead in Himachal’s Pong wetlands, human activities banned within 10-km
The local administration of Himachal Pradesh has sounded an alert by banning all the human activities within 10-km radius of the Pong wetlands in Kangra district. This comes in the wake of death of over 1800 migratory waterbirds. Their carcasses have been sent to different laboratories to determine the cause of death.
