The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) replaces the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) which was enacted in 1973 and was the primary legislation describing the procedures of law to implement criminal law. The three new criminal laws that received the presidential assent in December 2023 and came in effect on July 1, have been brought in to replace the previous three laws, which were often described as archaic and colonial from time to time.
