New Delhi: Akshay Kumar’s 'Mission Raniganj' and Bhumi Pednekar’s 'Thank You For Coming' had a slow opening weekend at the box office. The two films of completely different genres failed to achieve big numbers over the weekend. While Akshay Kumar starrer is a real-life based thriller, Bhumi’s film is a chick flick that has found its audience in premium multiplexes only. Low Sunday numbers for both films can also be attributed to the India vs Australia World Cup match.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Mission Raniganj collected Rs 4.80 crore on Sunday bringing its weekend total to Rs 12.15 crore. The film opened at Rs 2.8 cr and on Saturday the collections jumped to Rs 4.50 cr, on Sunday the film collected Rs 4.80 cr. Thank You For Coming, on the other hand, had a weekend total of Rs 4.42 crore. The film had opened with Rs 1.06 crore and collected Rs 1.56 crore on Saturday and 1.80 crore on Sunday.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh updated the box office number of Thank You For Coming and wrote, “#ThankYouForComing finds flavour at premium multiplexes, although the overall total is on the lower side… Going forward, needs to sustain at Fri levels to leave a mark… Fri 1.06 cr, Sat 1.56 cr, Sun 1.80 cr. Total: ₹ 4.42 cr. #India biz. #Boxoffice”
Thank You For Coming, also starring Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Shibani Bedi, and Kusha Kapila, is directed by Karan Boolani and written by Radhika Anand and Prashasti Singh. The film explores themes like female friendship, the challenges single women face, and modern women's pursuit of pleasure and independence.
Mission Raniganj is the last release for Akshay Kumar in 2023 and the actor had said before the release that the film has a niche audience and is not expected to earn like Jawan.
"Like, 'Mission Raniganj' is made on a certain budget, and I want to call 'Mission Raniganj' a commercial film. It is not like a 'Jawan' or a 'Rowdy Rathore'. It’s not that kind of film, it has a niche audience but I hope it does good business," Kumar was quoted as saying by PTI.
The rescue thriller is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai.
