68% Voter Turnout In Sikkim, 67% In Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh recorded 67.71% voter turnout, while Sikkim saw 68.04%. 

52% Voting Recorded In Sikkim Till 3 PM

52.73 percent of 4.64 lakh voters in Sikkim cast their votes in the 32 Assembly seats till 3 pm on Friday.

Assembly Elections LIVE: BJP's Bid To Retain Power In Arunachal

The Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking a return in Arunachal Pradesh after it won 41 of the 60 Assembly seats in the northeastern state in the last assembly polls. Janata Dal (United) followed BJP with seven seats, the National People’s Party won five seats while Congress got four seats. The PPA secured one seat and two Independent candidates won.


This time, the BJP had fielded 60 candidates in all the assembly seats while the opposition Congress put up 19 nominees, National People’s Party (NPP) 20, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) 14 and the People’s Party of Arunachal 11.


The saffron party has already won 10 seats unopposed.

Former footballer Baichung Bhutia is testing his electoral fate as he is among the 146 candidates in the fray for the Sikkim polls. Bhutia recently merged his Hamro Sikkim with Sikkim's main opposition party, Sikkim Democratic Front, which had been ruling the state for 25 years from 1994 to 2019 but lost to Prem Singh Tamang-led SKM in the last Assembly elections.

Assembly Elections LIVE: Weather Likely To Play Spoilsport In Arunachal Pradesh

Ahead of the first phase of voting for two Lok Sabha seats and 50 MLAs, weather could play a spoilsport in the northeastern state as per the India Meteorological Department with predictions of moderate to high rainfall. “We have arranged temporary shelters with all basic facilities in the polling booths where people can wait if the weather is not conducive,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Pawan Kumar Sain said.

With the weather likely to play spoilsport, Arunachal Pradesh is all set to vote on Friday to elect two Lok Sabha MPs and 50 MLAs. In the 60-member assembly, the BJP has already won 10 constituencies unopposed.


In the Arunachal West Parliamentary seat, eight candidates are in the fray including Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju and state Congress president Nabam Tuki. Sitting BJP MP Tapir Gao and state Congress vice-president Bosiram Siram are among six candidates who are contesting from Arunachal East. All arrangements have been completed to conduct polling which will begin at 7 AM and continue at 5 PM.


In Sikkim, Chief Minister and SKM supremo Prem Singh Tamang, former CM and SDF chief Pawan Kumar Chamling are among the 146 candidates in fray for 32 assembly seats which will go to the polls on Friday amid elaborate security arrangements in the Himalayan state. Tamang, who is spearheading the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM)'s bid to retain power, is contesting from two assembly seats, Rhenock in Gangtok district and Soreng-Chakung in his native Soreng district.


The SKM chief who is seeking a seventh consecutive term as MLA, is locked in a multi-cornered contest in both assembly constituencies with former minister and SDF nominee Som Nath Poudyal being his main challenger in Rhenock assembly constituency, while SDF candidate AD Subba is his main opponent in Soreng-Chakung assembly constituency.


The SKM supremo's wife Krishna Kumari is contesting from Namchi-Singhithang assembly constituency where she is locked in a quadrangular contest in which the SDF has put up Bimal Rai. An estimated 4.64 lakh electorate, comprising 2,32,381 male voters and 2,31,545 female will be eligible to exercise their franchise to elect 32 MLAs and the lone Lok Sabha MP.


There are 2,502 third-gender voters, while 4,192 voters belong to Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category and 2,473 voters are senior citizens above 85 years. The Election Commission has arranged for Assured Minimum Facilities along with accessibility-friendly infrastructure for PwDs and senior citizens in all polling stations, according to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) D Ananadan.
