Background
Peren Result 2023 Live Updates: Former Nagaland Chief Minister and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) leader Taditui Rangkau Zeliang is one of the key candidates whose fate will be decided on Thursday. The votes polled are being counted and the ex-CM is eyeing another term from the crucial seat of Peren (ST) in Nagaland. NPF's Kingudi Joseph is another candidate from this seat.
70-year-old TR Zeliang has played a vital role in the politics of Nagaland. A seven-time MLA, Zeliang has also been a Rajya Sabha MP from 2004-08. He has served two terms as the Chief Minister of Nagaland. He first assumed the office in 2014 after the then CM Neiphiu Rio resigned as he was elected to the Lok Sabha. In 2017, Zeliang stepped down from the post due to the political scenario in the state.
He was again sworn-in as the CM within months after Shurhozelie Liezietsu failed to prove a majority in the Assembly. However, again in March 2018, Zeliang had to resign as the Chief Minister.
TR Zeliang is contesting the polls from the seat of Peren, from where he is the sitting MLA. The only difference is that in the last elections in 2018, he won this seat as a Naga People’s Front (NPF) candidate. In 2022, Zeliang and 20 other MLAs from the NPF joined the NDPP and entered the ruling coalition of BJP-NDPP. Notably, the rebel MLAs of NPF were led by ex-CM Zeliang.
The National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has again entered into an alliance with the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for the Nagaland elections in 2023 after winning together in 2018. The NDPP is contesting 40 Assembly seats while the BJP is eyeing 20 seats in the state. In the last election, the NDPP won 17 seats. But, 21 NPF MLAs joined the coalition in 2022.
After NPF joined the BJP-NDPP alliance, this all-party government was called United Democratic Alliance (UDA). TR Zeliang was made UDA's chairman in February 2022.
Polling was held in total of 2291 polling stations across 59 of the total 60 constituencies.
The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced repolling in four polling stations out of the 2,291 polling stations across Nagaland that went to polls on Monday.
On the basis of reports submitted by general observers and after taking all material circumstances into account, the commission declared the voting held on Monday at the four polling stations as void, said EC under-secretary Surender Singh.
