Background
MCD Election 2022 LIVE: Elections for the MCD are being held on Sunday and the results will be tallied on December 7.
MCD is an essential part of municipal administration and affects people on a daily basis, hence the contest involves high stakes for both the AAP and the BJP. Nearly 80% of Delhi is administered by the municipal authority, which offers almost as many services as the city government.
It will be the AAP's second attempt at a civic election. The AAP was unable to defeat the BJP at MCD despite sweeping to historic victory in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections.
The elections will be crucial for the BJP, which has controlled the MCD for three straight terms, to keep control of the local political scene after suffering two consecutive losses at the assembly elections.
A total of 1349 candidates are in the fray in the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections. Of these, 709 are female candidates, while 640 are male candidates. Among the three parties, the Aam Aadmi Party has given tickets to the maximum number of women (140). AAP is followed by the BJP at 137 and the Congress at 134. BJP and Aam Aadmi Party are contesting on all 250 seats in this year’s Municipal elections, while Congress has fielded candidates on 247 seats only.
In the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections campaign, BJP has fielded top leaders including Chief Ministers of many states, and Union Ministers. At the same time, the Aam Aadmi Party has also fielded its star campaigners in every ward in this election.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police conducted patrolling at Daryaganj and Jama Masjid areas on Saturday ahead of the elections.
“We conducted foot patrolling to ensure that MCD elections are conducted in a free and fair manner tomorrow. There're over 200 polling premises and around 700 polling booths of which 54 are critically sensitive, in the Central zone,” news agency ANI quoted Shweta Chauhan, DCP, Central Delhi, as saying.
