Manipur Election 2022 Voting LIVE: Polling Concludes For First Phase, 78.03% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 5 PM

Polling for 38 seats in the first phase of Manipur Assembly election concluded today. A total of 173 candidates including 15 women contested on 38 seats spread across five districts of the State. 29 valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East and Bishnupur, and the rest of the hill seats of Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Pherzawl underwent polls in the first phase of election. 


Voter turnout was recorded 78.03% till 5 pm.

78.03% voter turnout has been recorded till 5 pm in the North Eastern state of Manipur which underwent first phase of polls for 38 seats today. 


 






District-wise voter turnout in Maipur is as follows:


Imphal East: 76.64%


Imphal West: 82.19%


Bishnupur: 73.44%


Kangpokpi: 82.97%


Churachandpur: 74.45%

Manipur Election 2022 Phase 1 Voting LIVE: Less than half an hour after voting commenced in Manipur, Governor La Ganesan and Chief Minister N Biren Singh exercised their franchise in their respective constituencies.

The governor, after casting his vote at a polling booth in TG Higher Secondary School in Sagolband assembly constituency in Imphal West district, appealed to all eligible voters in Manipur to exercise their franchise.

"There is democracy in our country and the sign of democracy is election. The poll officers have made good arrangements," he said.

Ganesan has been enrolled as a voter in Sagolband seat. He was handed over the EPIC card by the CEO earlier this month. He was earlier enrolled as a voter in Thiyagaraya Nagar assembly constituency in Chennai.

The chief minister and his wife cast their votes in a model polling station in Heingang constituency in Imphal East district.

"I request all voters to exercise their franchise, and maintain peace," he said.

Polling in 38 constituencies in the 60-member assembly began at 7 AM amid tight security and strict adherence to COVID-19 norms. (PTI)





Manipur Election 2022 Phase 1 Voting Live: Polling for first phase begins

 Polling in the first phase of assembly elections in Manipur began at 7 AM on Monday in 38 constituencies spread across five districts with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

As many as 12,09,439 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect their representatives from among 173 candidates, including 15 women, across 1,721 polling stations.

The prominent candidates in the fray include Chief Minister and BJP candidate N Biren Singh, Assembly Speaker Y Khemchand Singh, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP candidate Yumnam Joykumar and Manipur Congress president N Lokesh Singh.

Of the 38 seats, 10 constituencies are in Imphal East, 13 in Imphal West, six each in Bishnupur and Churachandpur, and three in Kangpokpi district.

Manipur Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Agarwal has said that out of the total 173 candidates, 39 have criminal antecedents.

The BJP has fielded candidates in all the 38 seats, followed by Congress with 35 contestants, NPP with 27, JD (U) with 28, Shiv Sena with seven, RPI (Athawale) with six, LJP (Ram Vilas) with three, and Kuki National Assembly and Kuki People's Alliance with two each. Eighteen Independents are also in the fray.

As many as 6,884 polling personnel have been deployed for the exercise. Arrangements for webcasting are in place and micro-observers have been deployed at sensitive polling stations.

Photo Voter Slip has been discontinued as identity proof and voters are required to produce documents approved by the Election Commission of India such as EPIC card, Aadhaar card, MNREGA job card, driving license and PAN card.

The BJP had formed the government in Manipur in 2017 with the support of the National People's Party (NPP), Naga People's Front (NPF), and the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).

However, the saffron party is contesting all the seats alone this time.

The Congress has formed an alliance with CPI, CPI(M), Forward Bloc, RSP and Janata Dal (Secular).

The grand old party had emerged as the single largest party winning 28 of the 60 seats in the 2017 state polls.

The voting for the remaining 22 seats in the 60-member House will take place in the second phase on March 5 while the counting of votes will be held on March 10.

All polling stations have been sanitised and circles have been marked outside the polling booths to enable the voters to maintain social distancing while they stand in a queue.

Wearing masks, using hand sanitiser and conducting thermal screening are among the other COVID protocols to be carried out at the polling booths.

Polling will end at 4 PM and COVID-19 patients can vote between 3 PM and 4 PM.

Chief Minister and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, N Biren Singh will be contesting the election from Heingang seat in the district of Imphal East.


From the Congress party, senior legislator and president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), N Loken Singh is fighting from Nambol constituency and senior party MLA, TN Haokip is fielded from Saikot seat. 


18 independent candidates are in fray in the first phase of polling in the State. 


Second phase of polling in Manipur will take place on March 5 and the votes will be counted on March 10.

On Sunday, fifth phase of polling for Uttar Pradesh Assembly concluded with 624 candidates contesting across the districts of Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Banda, and Fatehpur.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi on the same day where he addressed an election rally. The PM slammed Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and said that terrorists were fearless during their regime in the State.
