To give a further boost to the NDA campaign in Punjab, PM Narendra Modi will address a public rally in Pathankot on Wednesday. It will be the second of the three BJP rallies to be addressed by the PM.

Background

Assembly Election 2022 HIGHLIGHTS: Hello and welcome to ABP Live blog to find all the latest news from the polling battlegrounds of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Manipur.

Ahead of the assembly polls in Punjab to be held on February 20, to give NDA a boost for the assembly elections, PM Modi is scheduled to address a rally in Pathankot on 16 February and third in Abohar on 17 February.

The BJP is battling the Punjab assembly polls in coalition with former chief minister Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-drove Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).

With the voting process for the second phase of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections over, preparations for the third phase have started. In the third phase, voting for 59 assembly seats will be held on February 20. In such a situation, all the political parties have given their strength for the upcoming phase.

In the third phase, the election will cross through western Uttar Pradesh and Bundelkhand to reach the Awadh region. In this phase, the most eye will be on Karhal, the seat of Samajwadi Party President and former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Akhilesh is in the electoral fray from the Karhal Assembly Constituency of Mainpuri. BJP candidate and Union Minister SP Singh Baghel is contesting against SP chief. The election campaign of both parties is at its peak in Karhal as the parties are not wanting to leave any stone unturned this time.

The heat of the election campaign is more intense than the scorching sun in the day. The round of accusations and counter-allegations is also going on. In such a situation, it will be worth waiting to see which party gets the lead in the third phase.

In the third phase, simultaneous elections will be held in three parts of the state. The electoral heat is about to show its effect in western UP and Bundelkhand as well as in the Awadh region. Voting will be held on February 20 for 19 assembly seats in five districts of western Uttar Pradesh namely Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etah, Kasganj and Hathras.

At the same time, voting will be held in 13 assembly seats in five districts of Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Hamirpur and Mahoba districts in Bundelkhand. Voters will case their votes in six districts of Awadh region.

The 27 assembly seats of Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Auraiya, Farrukhabad, Kannauj and Etawah in this region will also witness voting.

The challenge before the Bharatiya Janata Party is to repeat the performance in the third phase of the assembly elections. In the 2017 elections, the party had won 49 out of 59 assembly seats in these areas. Out of the remaining 10 seats, 8 went to the Samajwadi Party. Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party won one seat each. At that time, SP and Congress were in an alliance. Hence, the SP alliance had got 9 seats. While the BJP is trying to repeat its performance once again, the Samajwadi Party is trying to increase its dominance here.
