With Jharkhand victory, Congress grabs power in 7th state

The victory of the JMM-Congress alliance in Jharkhand has come as a moral booster for opposition unity and for the grand old party seeking to become relevant again in Indian politics after suffering two successive defeats in general elections.

Party leaders feel that the BJP is not invincible and can be defeated if like-minded parties get together. This, they feel, has been proved right in some states and the experiment can be implemented in upcoming polls.

The poll results indicate that local and real issues of farm crisis, economy and unemployment have found more resonance at the ground and that bodes well for the opposition in future polls to win back states from the BJP.

2014 Assembly election results

After BJP swept power at the Centre, the party managed to increase its tally from 18 in 2009 Assembly polls to 37 in 2014 polls in the state. After the polls, six JVM-P MLA merged with the BJP.

JMM won 17 seats, while its current ally Congress bagged six seats, and five seats went to AJSU's tally.

The tenure of the current Assembly ends on January 5, 2020. This is the fourth Assembly election in Jharkhand since the state was carved out of Bihar in 2000.
Exit polls predict hung Assembly

The exits polls have indicated a marginal advantage to the JMM-led alliance but have pointed towards a hung Assembly.
According to the ABP/C-Voter exit poll, JMM, Congress and RJD will retain 35 seats. It has, however, given 32 seats to the ruling BJP, 5 to AJSU and three to the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) and six to others.
Key seats

Raghubar Das is contesting from the Jamshedpur East seat against his ex-cabinet colleague Saryu Rai, who is fighting as an independent, and Congress candidate Gourav Vallabh.

Former Chief Minister Hemant Soren is the fray from two seats -- Dumka and Barhet. BJP has pitted Women and Child Development Minister Louis Marandi in Dumka against Soren.

Among other big leaders are AJSU President Sudesh Mahto, who lost the 2014 Assembly poll, and is trying his luck again from Silli seat and former Chief Minister and JVM-P chief Babulal Marandi who is fighting from Dhanwar Assembly seat.

Jharkhand Agriculture Minister Randhir Singh is contesting from Sarath constituency, former deputy chief minister and sitting JMM MLA Stephen Marandi is in the poll fray from Maheshpur and JD(U)'s Salkhan Murmu is fighting from Sikaripara.
Major political parties

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), All Jharkhand Students' Union (AJSU) and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) are among the major political parties which are in the fray in the tribal-dominated state.
BJP, which had won 37 seats in the last Assembly elections, coined the slogan 'Abki baar 65 paar'. However, the ruling party is facing a stiff challenge as the alliance of JMM, Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) seems to have an advantage, as per exit polls released last week.
According to the post-poll survey, BJP is likely to win 32 seats in the 81-member Assembly. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), its allies Congress & RJD are slated to get 35 seats, while the All Jharkhand Students’ Union (AJSU) is projected to win 5 seats. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) is predicted to win 3 seats. Other parties in fray may also secure 6 seats.
As per ABP-CVoter survey, it was earlier revealed that even as the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha+ (Congress & Rashtriya Janata Dal) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are locked in a hotly contested battle to emerge victors, both would find it tough to cross the magic figure of 41 seats.
The maximum rounds of counting will take place at Chatra with 28 rounds and lowest round at two seats - Chandankyari and Torpa.

Both BJP and Congress alliance made their best efforts to lure the voters.
The counting of votes for 81 Assembly seats, which went to polls in five phases from November 30 to December 20, will start at 8 a.m. in all the 24 district headquarters.
As the five phases of the Jharkhand Assembly polls concluded on Friday, all the contending political parties have now braced up for the counting of votes, which is to take place on Monday. The Election Commission has made arrangements for counting at all the districts headquarters. The first result is expected around 1 p.m.
