As the second phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 came to a close, 66% voter turnout was recorded across 95 Lok Sabha seats in 12 states and Puducherry on Thursday. Total turnout by 5 pm for the second phase of polls remained 61.12%, in the staggered battle for a new Parliament, marred by stray violence in West Bengal and muted polling in Srinagar. CPI-M MP and candidate Mohd Salim was attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists in Raiganj constituency where he is seeking re-election when he went to a polling booth to check reports of vote rigging, officials said. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also accused the Trinamool Congress of unleashing violence on its opponents, a charge denied by the ruling party in West Bengal.

Jammu and Kashmir: Nearly 65 per cent polling was recorded in Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, while the turnout was low in Srinagar seat with nearly 15 per cent voters exercising their franchise till 5 pm on Thursday in the second phase of general elections in Jammu and Kashmir, according to poll officials.
No major untoward incident was reported during polling which was being held amid tight security due to militant threats and a boycott call by separatists in Kashmir.
However, there was a protest by a group of displaced Kashmiri migrants in Jammu after some of the members found their names missing in the voters list at a special polling station. (PTI)

Official sources said the Thattanchavady Assembly segment, which also simultaneously went to a by-poll, registered 73 per cent.
The preliminary figures were as of 6 PM at the close of polling, they said adding it was likely to go up.

Over 51% vote in Bengal amid violence:

Over 51 per cent of the electorate cast their votes in the three northern West Bengal constituencies in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, amid several incidents of violence including an attack on a CPI-M candidate and the smashing of an EVM.

In the first six hours till 1 p.m., the overall polling percentage was 51.60, with Raiganj recording 52.54, Jalpaiguri 54.73 and Darjeeling 47.52 per cent turnout, an Election Commission (EC) official said in Kolkata.

Voting across 5,390 polling stations began at 7 a.m. and will end at 6 p.m.

A poll surveillance team has seized Rs 19 lakh cash from a car in Thane city of Maharashtra. The team intercepted the car, belonging to an architect, Durgesh Nadkarni, in Kolshet area on Wednesday and found the cash in it, it said in a release. Nadkarni claimed he was carrying the cash to some construction sites in Navi Mumbai area for payment to workers. The Income Tax department has been informed about the seizure and its officials will take further action in the matter.
