New Delhi: As counting is underway for the polls to 250-wards Municipal Corporation of Delhi, following the trends, final result to some of the wards have started to come out. Result for one such ward, Seelampur has come where Indpendent candidate, Shakila Begum has been declared the winner. 


Shakila Begum, 46 has won the Seelampur seat which is reserved for women and is considered a ward to be in Muslim-majority population. 


She had won the same ward in 2017 MCD polls on ticket given by Bhaujan Samaj Party but contested as Independent this time.

In the fray from the same ward were ten other candidates with Mumtaz fielded from Congress, Seema Sharma from BJP, Naseem Bano from AAP and Shabnam from All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen. Three candidates contested as Independents including Shakila Begum. 


The Seelampur area in North East Delhi is considered to be a sensitive area which was rocked by protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and saw widespread violence in February 2020.

Aam Aadmi Party’s Bobi Kinnar won from Delhi’s Sultanpuri-A ward by defeating Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka by 6714 votes. 


Bobi secured 14821 votes while Dhaka managed to get 8107 votes. Bobi is a transgender and her win significantly depicts the change in the societal mindset. She had earlier contested the civic body polls in 2017 as an independent candidate. 


Reacting to her victory, Bobi said, "I want to dedicate my victory to the people who worked so hard for me. I would like to thank everyone. Now I just have to work for development in my area."
