West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee visited state Government Control Room in Howrah to monitor the situation ahead of the expected landfall of cyclone 'Dana' later tonight.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the Severe cyclonic storm Dana over Northwest Bay Of Bengal moved North-Northwestards with a speed of 15 KMPH during past 6 hours and lay centred at 2030 HRS IST of October 24, over the same region, near latitude 20.10° N and longitude 87.30°E, about 70 KM East-Southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 90 KM South-Southeast of Dhamara (Odisha) and190 KM South-Southwest of Sagar Island (West Bengal).
People from vulnerable areas in Dhamara have been shifted to cyclone relief shelter as wind speed has started to pick up, ahead of expected landfall of cyclone 'Dana' later in the night today.

Odisha Special Relief Commissioner Deoranjan Singh said: "... Everything is under control as of now, officials are monitoring the situation at different spots. Tonight is very important and we will reevaluate the situation tomorrow morning after the cyclonic storm makes landfall."

As the time of suspending flight operations gradually approaches in the wake of cyclone Dana, the Kolkata airport authorities started making arrangements to ensure safety of people and planes and infrastructure at the facility.
Flight operations at the airport will be suspended for 15 hours from 6 pm on Thursday.
All entry and exit doors of the terminal building will be sealed after the last flight departs from the Kolkata airport while the aircraft parked on the bays will be tied up, airport Director Dr Pravat Ranjan Beuria said, news agency PTI reported.

In view of cyclone 'Dana', the West Bengal government has evacuated 1,59,837 people and shifted 83,537 people to relief camps till now.
The Odisha state government has accelerated evacuation efforts in coastal districts. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi conducted a review meeting and instructed officials to achieve “zero casualties” during the natural disaster.
Majhi said that around 300,000 people have been relocated to various cyclone shelters, and the operation is ongoing.
So far, a total of 7,285 cyclone centres have been established, and 91 medical teams have been deployed.
A safe zone was established at Mohona in Digha for Fishing Trawlers, Purba Medinipur, ahead of the expected cyclone 'Dana'.
Cyclone Dana is expected to make its landfall between midnight to tomorrow morning, said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department.
"The landfall will be between Puri and Sagardeep near Bhitarkarnika and Dhamra. The wind speed during the landfall is expected to be 100-120 kmph. At present, the wind speed in coastal areas in 60-70 kmph," he told PTI.
"Wind speed will be very high in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Medinipur districts. The intensity of rainfall will increase gradually. A few districts such as Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack are likely to get extremely heavy rainfall," he added.
Odisha: "Railway has taken many steps in view of cyclone 'Dana'. Railway Minister has reviewed our preparations and directed us to ensure as less traffic disruption as possible, so that we can manage during this cyclone effectively," says General Manager of East Coast Railway Parmeshwar Funkwal.
In view of the cyclone in Odisha and West Bengal, Indian Navy is preparing to conduct Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
Eastern Naval Command, in coordination with Naval Officers-in-Charge (NOIC) in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal, have activated a comprehensive disaster response mechanism, said the Indian Navy.
The command is working closely with units such as the Base Victualling Yard (BVY), Material Organisation and the naval hospital INHS Kalyani to provide essential supplies and medical support if sought by the State administration, it added.

Brahmani river in Odisha swelled up amid heavy rain as cyclone 'Dana' approaches Kendrapara Coast.

Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan singh Deo said the government is prepared for the Cyclone Dana.
"All concerned departments of the Government are in position and all officers & workers of the various departments of the Government are in place and ready to tackle any eventuality...Each and every department of the Government, including the Chief Minister, Urban Minister, Revenue Minister, everybody is seized of the situation and we are taking whatever necessary steps that need to be taken at the ground level. Rather than creating a fear psychosis amongst the people, we should be more pro-active and give justice to the people...," said the CM.
The administration of Puri Srimandir has adopted necessary emergency measures to ensure the timely and proper ‘Niti Kanti’ of Lord Jagannath and his siblings, amid Cyclone Dana, reported OdishaTV.
The temple administration has taken all necessary precautionary measures to avoid any inconvenience during divine "rituals".
The local administration and police are evacuating people living in the vulnerable areas in Dhamra in Odisha's Bhadrak district ahead of Cyclone Dana's landfall.
Cyclone Dana has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is moving north-westwards, said the India Meteorological Department.
The cyclone is moving north-westward with the speed 12km/hr during last 6 hours and now it is lying over central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal, said IMD Director Manorama Mohanty.
"It will make landfall between midnight of today to the early morning of the morning of 25 October as a severe cyclonic storm while crossing wind speed will be around 100 to 110 kilometres per hour... In the capital city, heavy rainfall is expected and wind speed will slowly increase and the highest wind speed is likely to occur tonight," she said.
The Odisha government has issued helpline number to accept complaints against traders charging high prices for vegetables and other essential commodities due to the impending cyclone.
Consumers can lodge their complaint against traders charging higher than the market price by dialing 0674-2396227.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has cancelled all his programmes and shall be monitoring the activities of the Cyclone Dana from the Control Room, said Raj Bhavan in an X post.
"...We are now, in a moment of crisis. #CycloneDana is nearing but we in Bengal have braved many storms. We will face Dana also with confidence and fortitude," said the Governor in a video message.
"Bengal will stand together. India will stand together. We shall overcome...Please follow all instructions issue by the Government and Disaster Management Authorities...All Disaster Management machinery of the State Government and the Government of India are kept well-oiled and fit...," he added.
The Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar will suspend its flight operations from Thursday 5PM till 9AM of October 25th, according to OdishaTV.

The cyclonic system formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday and is set to bring heavy rainfall in several districts of southern West Bengal including North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly.

Over 30 per cent of the targeted 10 lakh people have been evacuated to safe places by Wednesday evening in Odisha, said Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. He reviewed the government's preparedness for the cyclone and said that steps are being taken to evacuate people from danger zones.
In West Bengal, a total of 13 teams of the National Disaster Response Force have been deployed in southern districts to respond to emergency situations.
More than 170 express and passenger trains running through South Eastern Railway (SER) jurisdiction have been cancelled and the Eastern Railway will not operate EMU local trains from Sealdah station and Hasnabad sections from 8 pm on October 24 till 10 am on October 25.
68 suburban trains in the Howrah division have also been cancelled by the ER.
Authorities at Kolkata airport also said that flight operations will remain suspended for 15 hours from 6 pm on Thursday in view of the impending cyclone.
“In view of cyclone Dana's impact on the coastal region of West Bengal, including Kolkata, it has been decided to suspend the flight operations from 6 pm on October 24 to 9 am on October 25 due to predicted heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall at Kolkata,” an AAI spokesperson said.
